Hi,

Sorry, not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I'm feeling a bit down... my friend's looking for a new horse so I've been looking on the internet and sending her some prospective horses.

But I didn't expect to come across my old mare for sale, who I had to sell after my first year of university. The people who I sold her to promised that they would never sell her and if they did choose to, that I would have first refusal of her. Okay, I know circumstances change, but I thought they would still contact me at least...

They have also lied about her age. I'd guess by now she'd be about 17/18 years old, but they've advertised her as a 10 year old.

Sadly I can't afford to buy her - they're asking an awful lot for her - which I guess is a good thing as she won't go to any old home.

It broke my heart to sell her and now I'm feeling it all over again.

Hi Lauren

I really feel for you...I can imagine how you feel because I sold my much loved pony after my first year at uni, and lost track of her, and if I were to come across her now, I would be gutted, and so desperate to buy her back... in fact, I've had two dreams where I did buy her back!

At least, as you say, she is going for a good price, and if someone is paying so much, they are more likely to have her vetted, in which case, her age should be confirmed, and her new owners will be able to take it into account.

Also, as you say, circumstances do change - you mut have thought the people were decent to sell her to them in the first place, and so they are probably decent enough to find her a good home.

Just a thought - is it the people you sold her to who is selling her now? If not, then perhaps the current owners are unaware of her age - could you email and tell them?

Shame they didn't give you first refusal though - maybe they lost your details?

I can't offer advise, only support, and a hug (((lauren)))

Hi Kelly,

Thanks... it literally is heartbreaking selling them, isn't it?

They did seem nice, caring people. I was terribly fussy who she went to but I can't help worrying she will end up being be sold to a teenager who will hammer her around enormous tracks (she's a superb jumper).

Its Saturday tomorrow. Maybe I'll win the lottery.

Kash - really sorry bout ur mare you should contact them though about the age thing as its out of order for people to do that both for the horse and the new owners especially if they waste a lot of money on vettings etc.

Hi, thats a shame, but you could inform them that they are lying about her age which is unlawful, they might then bring down her price? I have just agreed to buy back a mare and foal I sold two weeks ago and giving all their money back . There is nothing wrong with the mare and foal and they were both vetted before leaving, but I cant stand the thought that these people dont want them now so they are coming home guess I will never make my millions my OH is furious with me

Lauren, I agree it is so sad when you think you have found the right home only to find that a little later on they are wanting to sell your treasured horse. Why don't you contact them to see why and ask if their is anything you can do to help. You could mention the fact that the horse is older than what they are advertising her at (in a very nice way).

I also hate parting with my horses - that's why I have fields full - but if we breed an animal we do have a duty of care forever for them. OK in your case you only owned her and did your best to find the right home but always keep the door open to give help etc.

Lynda I am so pleased you have got your mare and foal back - you can now sleep easy at night knowing you will find the "right" home for them. And husbands - they get over it, eventually
