Hi,

I have a 14.3hh PBA gelding who will be 5 in may. he is ridden 5 times a week for 1-1hr30 in trot with burts of canter.
we have our first 22km endurance ride on 2nd april, he will be doing PR all season, dressage and introducing jumping.

he is currently on scats hi-fi light mix and dengie hi-fi chaff (increasing from 1kg feed to 2 x 1kg feeds/day) and has 3 slabs hay a day.

i am thinking of introducing sugar beet to his feed to give him more energy supplies but have seen baileys no 6 - all round endurance mix which sounds good

any reccomendations? thanks!
toni xx

Hi Toni,

What he is on sounds good and he is doing quite a bit of work already on his present feed. If he isn't dropping weight, don't add anything! Don't forget the spring is around the corner and the grass will give all the additional goodness you may want - or not! (I'll be putting a grazing muzzle on my advanced endurance gelding...)

I wouldn't use an endurance mix unless doing 50 miles+ rides.

Good luck and have fun at Wiltshire Droves! (I'll be doing the 52km)

Marie.

Thanks Marie
he is in good condition i.e doesnt want to put any more on, but doesnt want to lose any - its just he has been tired the past few days and i have really had to push him on, hence why i am increasing his ffed from 1kg to 2kg.

spillers feed merchant recommended he should be on 2.5kg hard feed a day so if i up his mix and chaff, maybe add some corn oil, and see how he goes?

In that case, you'd probably be best adding a balancer, so that he gets all the nutrients he needs without upping the calories.

My boy is on Nestler "Solid Gold" with token unmolassed sugar beet and alfalfa and is doing very well on that.

Marie.

I feed Baileys No 6 Endurance Mix - it is low starch and is meant for long term energy so not purely aimed at endurance horses. It is non heating so stamina rather than fizz. It is high fibre as well and I have found that unlike other mixes it doesn't 'hot' Dulcie up. I am very pleased with it

Toni
If your boy has suddenly started to lack energy I would first look at blood testing him to see if there is any thing a miss.
My advanced horses x3 are only on a handful of luccern ,Nesler solid gold balancer and speedy beet plus garlic and adlib hay, last weekend two of them completed a 66k (40miles)endurance ride. Both finished the ride with plenty of energy and very good pulse rates.
I would only use the Baileys No6 after the ride and a very small amount (a handful) at the half way halt.Even when they.
are competeing at much longer distances I still would only use it if they had worked really hard.
After rereading you post i see your boy is not 5 until May. I would say that working for 1-1.1/2hrs 5 days a week doing a fair amount of trotting with some canter work would be too much, his young body does not seem to have time to recover from one workout to another.I would easy off some of the work and just take him out for a nice walk.

hi pauline

i live near salisbury
the past few days i have just taken him for an hour's walk and gentle trot and today i long lined him in walk/trot for 1/2hr and have split his feed into 2 - increasing his mix and chaff
will give it a week or so, see how it goes. his temperament is still normal and his behaviour hasn't changed so i dont think i will need a blood test; think he is finally feeling the increase in work over the past 4 weeks, im sure he'll pick up at the ride!

thanks xxx

Hi Toni

Your ride info will arrive about 10days before the ride.

No I am riding one and a friend is riding the other. It is part of my buildup for the Golden Horse Shoe. Will be doing the 100 miles there.

I would say still give your boy some time off.As a youngster he needs to build and lay down good bone, tissue and muscle.Unlike race horses we want our horses to be competing well into their teens.Do not increase the Mix too much for the distance you want to do it is best to keep the fiber bulk up.As I said my horse compete on less than 2lb of hard feed (if you can call a balancer hard feed)a day.

See you in Salisbury
Pauline

I lived on the edge of Salisbury just down from Old Sarum but kept my pony at Coombe Bissett.

thanks pauline
at present he is ridden 5 times a week for 1-1hr30 in walk, trot with bursts of canter, i let him go (generally) at his own steady pace and we ride over the plains which is pretty much straight

i only school him gently in the field for 1/2hr a week, and when i say school it is circles, change of rein in walk and trot and gently taking up a contact
i have started trot poles with him which he enjoys but do not intend to properly introduce jumping until next year when he is 6 although i will probably take him to some xc courses (dene farm, tenantry farm) over the winter the more he sees the better i think!
