Posted - 12 Dec 2018 : 09:23:58 AM Due to having previously suffered badly from rug rubs I have in recent years restricted myself to belly and bib clips and rugging as lightly as I can get away with on an exposed Scottish hillside. However this year I am struggling to keep him cool enough while giving him sufficient protection. This morning found a small patch of wet eczema in an armpit which I suspect is from sweating excessively.
So he is currently out naked and later I will do a high chaser and make him comfortable. Looking for advice on how best to prevent rug rubs and also recommendations for girth sleeves as without he will also get girth galls Currently have a lovely sheepskin sleeve but washing and drying over winter on a regular basis is impractical so hoping for something lower maintenance.
Needless to say this is forecast by the weekend.... Happens every time I get my clippers out.
Here's hoping someone stops by the forum with some advice |

Posted - 17 Dec 2018 : 6:32:04 PM I use the nuumed girth sleeves, they wash and dry very quickly and have stopped my girl getting rubbed. I also have a sheepskin one but like you say they are not practicle when having to wash all the time as take ages to dry so I save them for competitions. |

Posted - 14 Dec 2018 : 10:50:29 AM Thanks guys, I cant run to a whole new rugging system just before Christmas so Ive ordered a bib which I will keep scrupulously clean and a couple of fleece girth sleeves (which I didn't even know were a thing!) If the fleece sleeves don't work then I'll try string girth! |

Posted - 13 Dec 2018 : 8:37:13 PM Can't help with the rug rubs (I don't clip mine) but they do have sensitive skin. The only girth that doesn't give them any problem, even if not perfectly clean, it's a string girth (a bit like the Western cinches). Stubben does them.Soft, very easy to wash.Always used one like that, even for all day long rides and with every climate. |

Posted - 12 Dec 2018 : 7:21:24 PM I have sensitive skinned boys too. I have the Rambo Duo and Rambo Optimo rugs with the liner system. I wash the liners every week to stop grease build up. They fit in the washing machine and dry overnight on an airer. So far no rubs. I also bought some Polartec fleece on line and made some girth sleeves (just a tube). Again wash after every ride and they dry in no time.
