Just wondered if anyone had any experiences similar to this.
My boy has had a swelling directly in front of his sheath for 3/4 weeks now. Its not the actual sheath but more the tendon/vein bits either side directly in front of it (its hard to describe..Ill try taking a pic tomorrow).
When i discovered it, I gave his sheath a good clean as it was pretty manky. Thought Id wait a few days and see if that helped. It was still same a week later so I got the vet out. It was a junior one. She had a feel, gave him another little clean...got the bean out..urgh. Said to try danilon for a few days to see if that made a difference but 'it might stay like that..or it might go away'. Hes never once complained about anyone touching the swollen bits. Does feel warm but Id expect it in that area. He does stand with his willy poking out a bit. Still well within himself, eating etc. Vet did check his temp etc and everything was fine.
I didnt think much of the vets response tbh. It swollen for a reason and its not normal!
So anyway, I thought Id keep an eye on it and hes due his 3rd flu jab so figured Ill get a diff vet to check it.
Tonight while using my hand to wipe dried mud off this area I noticed a small spot of slimy blood on my fingers. Now he has a small swelling on his tummy about 2/3inches from his sheath and this is where the blood/pus came from.
Obviously impossible to poultice, Ive left it to free drain itself. There is obv infection in there and its pooled at the bit in front of his sheath.
I am going to get vet again to it as Im concerned there is an abscess in his abdomen that might need drained. I just wondered if anyone had experience of this? I cant find any causes of it..hes not had any cuts etc |

Well hes now on antibiotics. Not actually because of the sheath but because of an infected puncture wound. Now on vet bill number 3 in 4 weeks....
 Had to be done though. What I originally thought was a kick from another horse now doesnt appear so (he also has a laceration on other leg and bruising on inner thigh). Puncture wound has gone pretty deep and hit the splint bone. Luckily no tendon/ligament damage or fractures etc...phew! So hes being treated aggressively with abx. No further signs of problems with his tummy. Sheath has appeared to go down a bit since the last vet sedated and gave a thorough clean..so will see what happens now. |

If it doesn't clear up ask the vet for a 5 day course of antibiotics; he shouldn't need to come out again and the oral antibiotics are only about £3 a sachet or less. They treat a 500Kg horse so if your horse is lighter you might only need 4 but it is better to slightly overdose than under dose. My vet often tells me to give a sachet morning and evening for the first two days and then one a day and leaves me a box of 10.

well vet came out. Wasnt concerned about tummy bit and didnt think it was connected tot he sheath bit. He got sedated and his sheath cleaned properly. Vet got some gunk out but not exactly a huge amount. So time will tell now if it works. Ive to give him 2 days of danilon and see how he is after that. Vet didnt seem concerned about it. Prob thinks Im over reacting, lol. |

My friends Highland had a very swollen sheath and vet put it down to infection from probable insect bite as there were marks where something had attacked him. We never knew what it was exactly but he had bute and antibiotics.
I am sure all will be well.

He is a bit overweight as he always gets coming out of summer and he does tend to carry it round his belly. Tonight it seemed to have stopped weeping. It did feel a bit squishy like there was a bit of fluid there (on his tummy). I stood with a hot cloth on it in the hope to draw some out, lol. I got tiny bit of yellow. Im convinced its connected to the sheath. The sheath swelling seems to be more on one side than the other now.
So Ive booked vet to come tomorrow anyway. He needs his flu jab so might as well do both in one visit. He also has a tiny possible sarcoid in the sheath area. It doesnt look like its sore or grown or anything so ill get him to check that out too. |

I think you are right about getting the vet again.
The first experience I had of this was with our older gelding, and it improved after cleaning, and we were told it was not uncommon in older horses. My yellow pony is rather swollen in the general sheath area, I cleaned it and it didn't improve, so I had him examined and the vet told me it was because he was overweight, he is very round. Doesn't seem to bother him - i.e. it is not painful. I am not sure either of these scenarios covers your boy's condition - never seen any blood or pus. |
