I don't think the Horseware rugs are made like they used to be. I always liked the Rhino wug but the newer ones I have bought recently don't seem to fit as well as if they are cutting the cloth to save money. Infuriating!
I also believe that the thin rain sheets are not entirely waterproof and horses get damp and cold under them.
As Barbara said above I find you need to leave rugs on to dry otherwise you end up putting a very damp rug back on in the morning. |

Just got a new lightweight horseware rug for Ali as his old one isn't waterproof any longer, all of my others are made in Ireland, new one made in China! I hope they haven't gone for cheaper production and materials....like hunter did, the fabric looks the same but I have noticed the front straps do not sit perfectly straight and the belly straps are different lengths. Fingers crossed |

I've found Bucas Smartex Rain rugs to be very waterproof. They have a stay dry lining (sort of a thin fleece) so maybe don't count as 'very lightweight' but they are properly breathable and the one I bought in 2006 is still going strong. |

Ari, Rambo now make them for the chunkier horse, look for XL (I think) in the name and it is made bigger. I got one really cheap for a friend's chunky boy and she was delighted with it; fitted her horse a treat.

Can't fault Rambo' s or any Horseware Ireland as used them for years on my old girl, but sadly they are too tight in neck and shoulder for Ari. Just got him a Bucas Smartex med with temp range upto +12 and so far the weather and the rug have lived up to forecast.

The new Rambo optimos have no filling; replacing the Rambo Duos. I have never found any of my Rambo rugs to leak but you musn't take them off when they are wet as it is the body heat of the horse that keeps the water out. If you remove the rug the water goes through to the inside and they thgen take ages to dry out.

I have a Weatherbeeta Freestyle lwt that has a good cotton lining and substantial outer shell that has never leaked. I used it most of last mild winter but they are quite a generous fit. |

Best turnout I have is a really old Horseware Ireland rug with a fleece lining, it belonged to my first horse who I had 13 years ago she was pts 5 years ago and it was still going strong then, I still use it on Arabi now he has destroyed much of it but I keep repairing it, its had new front buckles and surcingles its full of patches but it never leaks even in the heaviest rain, he has ripped the front of it this year but I will still get it repaired as its just so waterproof its worth it, they just don't make them like that anymore. |

That's why I like the Rambo Duo and Premier Equine Trio rugs - you start off with a lightweight turnout rug (although the Rambo Duo does have a 40gm fill), and then you attach liners of varying thicknesses as and when you need them, and the liners are so quick and easy to wash in the washing machine, they dry quickly too so you can have them back on the same day. I no longer wash my turnouts because of the effect it has on the waterproofing. PE rugs are cut large, so not ideal for skinnies.
Thin turnouts I have owned that were unsatisfactorily waterproof (without being washed):- Mark Todd - it was in a check pattern, BUCAS sunshimmer (or some such name), some Derby House - the ones with necks. |

Shires rain sheets have no filling. I find them pretty much waterproof but I NEVER wash rugs - just brush the worst of the mud off and roll & bag in old plastic feed sacks as long as they are completely dry first.

I've got Amigo Rugs. Mediumweight turnout never been waterproof since cleaned. Bought the waterproofing stuff that you paint on last year and that seemed to help. |

I find that once you've cleaned and reproofed them they never seem to be truly waterproof again. |

No, i've never found so. I have a Triple Crown lw rug - but with 100g filling - which is good, but every LW i've ever tried seems to give in with heavy rain |

Are any of the lightweight ones truly waterproof? Last year I bought Knight Rider, a make I find fantastic in heavier weight - have some going into 12th winter - and it was sodden on first wearing. Weatherbeeta Aspen (done a few seasons of cleaning and reproofing) came in sodden on Monday and is still wet and minging. Amigo claim to be 100% waterproof but front fastening doesn't suit my boys. Any advice please? |

I have been pleased with my Shires rugs, also for my younger ones Saxon seem to fit well and neither makes have leaked in this heavy rain we keep getting  |
