I liked the different classes for mares, geldings and stallions.
Does anyone know why they changed it?
Will the new class mean that fewer horses will be taking part? |

The one class very sadly is purely due to a drop in entries.
Grandstand media is a (very successful) company and in part makes (a lot) of money from levies.
The Arab exhibitors have steadily been falling year in year. Coupled with the fact that we (Arabs) were the ONLY breed with separate stallion, mare & gelding classes grandstand media were not going to keep it indefinitely.
Firstly they cut the qualifiers from 15 per section to 12 (2013) then for the new contract one class with 18 qualifiers was given, with the added small PBA class.
The PBA class (Arab & Welsh) has been hugely successful this season with over 400 exhibitors contesting the qualifying places (sadly the Purebreds are nowhere near that number)
The reason given for no large was they Gm feel that larges are pretty well response tend in hack/Ridinghorse/ISRT classes already.
Whether they decide to give the large PBA's their own class remains to be seen (it could well be at the cost of the Purebreds if timetable space and time dictates)
So we shall have to wait and see. But one thing that is for sure is that ridden our ridden numbers are in MASSIVE decline. A quick look at M&M classes that show over 50 PER class all vying for one HOYS ticket shows that other breeds are indeed showing a very healthy competition for their tickets, yet sadly our breed seems to be returning to the rarity it once was when they were a 'fancy for the few' in bygone days.
Very very sad.

RHS had part bred qualifier too. Didnt realise it was just ponies though...that in imo is rubbish!! Recently watching a pba class and only 1 was over 14.2hh...it was a 15hh SRT. Id like to see some bigger, proper riding horse/hunter types in the ring. Only having ponies at hoys encourages them to be small show ponies all the more. |

It is such a shame as I think the new combined class favours the professionals and makes it so much more difficult for the amateurs to qualify. I agree about not seeing the Champion trot down the centre line in the main arena too. |

Not sure what the new AA/PBA class is but I do know that the new PBA class is for PB Arabs and PB Welsh. Very few PB Arab only classes as only the National Show and Cherif of Arab orientated shows were qualifiers as far as I am aware. Incidentally the PBAs have to be little ones i.e ponies 14.2 and under.. |

My stallion won the Championship at HOYS last year it will be such a shame we will never see the Arab Champion trot down the centre line under the lights again as there is no championship, such an expensive show, cost me £1000 by the time I drove there then again for the Supreme stables Entries food drinks bedding in the wet leaking stables honestly would much rather be BNC love that show |

We now have a specific class for AA/PBA for the first time at HOYS .. there is plenty of information about why the change took place on the AHS website I believe but its been a topic of discussion for many months so yes there are fewer horses taking part I think its max 13 - 14 now and mixed sex.
I wont be spectating this year as working but would definitely recommend going along its a fabulous day/night out
- it is huge shame to loose the separate classes but, most importantly at least we still have one to represent the pure breds I;m going to be really interested to see who wins the AA/PBA class this year as its the first one |

We've been a few times, firstly to support a horse we sold, then just to watch and enjoy the show - we went for the Thurs and Fri.
I wouldnt go now for the mixed class, its a long, expensive journey from Aberdeen for just one class of Arabs. Such a pity but i suppose other classes make Grandstand Media more money, which is all they care about! |

Hi Caryn no Mooky's finished showing now, he did in-hand as a youngster, then 4 solid years of ridden showing, so now he's started doing performance, SJ, XC, dressage etc :-)
Re the classes, think it's a huge shame that the separate classes have gone, but if it means we get to keep a pure-bred class at HOYS then I guess a mixed class is better than nothing. It would be interesting to see it this year, how different it will all be, but don't think I'll be going this year. |

I was thinking of going this year. I was disappointed when I saw the program. I used to enjoy going on Arab day but loved to watch the coloreds as well beforehand. Now they are on different days and not so many arab classes don't think i'll bother. |

I am looking forward to going on the Friday, I will be the one sat next to my poor Husband who has no interest in horses what so ever hehe(is there a creche for Husbands?) I also went 2 yrs ago and loved it. Such a shame the Arab class is all one now though. |

I haven't been to HOYS before but a group from the yard is going on the Friday to support one of our friends whose purebred gelding qualified at Malvern in his first year of ridden showing, so I'm looking forward to it.

I love the atmosphere at HOYS and it's a great day out :-). My pure-bred stallion has competed there 3 times (the pics of the white grey in my signature below were taken of him at HOYS 2012), and also a pure-bred mare I bred and used to own has also competed 3 times, and it's very exciting. For those that haven't been, I am sure you will have a fabulous day! |

many show ponies are always ridden in side reins or draw reins imo, not just at hoys. Do they not have part bred arab classes too now? or is it olympia?? I heard it had changed, so not just pure breds. Thats a good thing, I think. Although I find those in part bred classes are clones of one another. My boy would stick out like a sore thumb being like ridden horse/small hunter type. Id be the only one wearing a tweed...not sure if it would go for or against me, but would like to give it a go next year.
Im going to hoys on the wednesday to watch the M&Ms, I expect it to be busy as they are very popular now. Going on the thursday morning for a bit but then have to drive 5 and half hours back up the road :(. Ill be in agony from sitting and not being able to walk out properly for folk dawdling in front of me.
Im still looking forward to it, never been to hoys before. Im trying to work out what kind of clothes to wear...I can imagine the shopping bit being roasting! Im planning to take a packed lunch as figured food will cost a fortune. |

Yes I'm going on the friday. I like the Caldene arena and the fact that it's not too massive. I only watched the arabs in that arena, so can't comment on the show ponies. I also like to watch the showjumping in the main arena and of course, browse the vast shopping area. |

I went 4 yrs ago for the first time for the Friday my only interest was to watch the Arabs and so enjoyed it. Have to say it was a very expensive day out with rail fare and entry plus I agree not good food so for me a "one off" as home and animals come first. I am no expert but the geldings were lovely and more home produced, whilst the top mares and stallions were as you would expect professionally produced so not an even playing field for the geldings if classes combined.
I know nowt about showing so happy to learn... |

Also Hoys is a horrid show. Catering is terrible (food is very close to my heart). Lots of very unattractive pinning down of show ponies. I went a couple of years ago where we witnessed a ladies hunter so sore through its back that it nearly collapsed when the saddle was put on. Really upsetting! The arab showing is in the small insignificant ring (although they were all really nicely shown) I can't see why you'd bother- Ok the shopping was good. Its a long way to travel to a tack shop. |

I know such a shame instead of 30 or so horses I think only half that will qualify so making it extra hard, you only qualify at the AHS shows by winning the championship now. |
