I have long been and admirer of the horses and riders that do Endurance but have only seen snippets of coverage until the other day watching WEG.
So enjoyed it for the skill of the riders, seeing so many Arabs and the scenery in France. Also enjoyed Charlotte and the wonderful Velegro and the inspirational para dressage.
Big thanks to Horse and Country Chanel for the coverage but for me the commentators lacking in detailed equine info that would have added so much for the likes of us and those that just tuned in to enjoy the sport.
They did give a bit of breeding and background info in the dressage but the bit of Endurance I watched never mentioned Arabs and why they excelled. |

No, please don't take offence Nashiba - mostly you'd have been right (!)- just not this time. Endurance gets SUCH bad press and Pauline, Linda and I love the sport so we are naturally we will defend it where possible.

Nashiba, please don't take offence, I only posted to clarify, and goodness knows that there have been cases this year where horses have been pushed too far and died as a result in Endurance, which is why new rules have had to be brought in, and why there was such concern that the WEG endurance competition should be run without any question that this had happened again. I do not know how it came to pass that the horse that died came to collide with a tree so catastrophically that it proved fatal, no doubt we will have to wait for the results of an official enquiry, and poor riding is obviously one of the possibilities, along with a number of others (panicked horse, the conditions etc. etc.). Please continue to post, your view is as valuable as anyone else's.
Edited to add: I was wrong, apparently four riders ended up in hospital, for anyone interested, here is a good round up of the Endurance event at WEG

Thanks Pauline.Thats me told.
I was just making an observation on the poor standard of riding in some cases.
I was not there and was told about the incident as I doubt it would have been shown on live TV.Obviously ,the story had been embellished along the way.
Apologies for misleading anyone.I shall keep my observations to myself in future.
Is it any wonder the posts are becoming less and less on here? |

Nashiba. Second hand information can be dangerous.
Linda. At least we got to see some of the Endurance , vet gate etc more than we normally get.
I thought the conditions of the the horses was good and the the vetting to a high standard. The new rules seem to be working. |

I watched the FEI TV coverage of the Endurance, and it was pretty dire - lots of distance or aerial shots of nothing in particular, it is really not a spectator sport, but the camera coverage could have been a lot better than it was. Watched the round up of the eventing today on BBC2, very thrilling, but utterly tragic for Harry Meade - I cannot imagine setting off full of excitement to compete for your country (or just compete) and coming home without your equine partner - just too awful.
A slight correction though, the horse that died just before CP1 during the endurance collided with a tree and died instantly, and the rider is in hospital with fractures and internal injuries - also tragic news, but the horse did not collapse and die. I agree that some of the riding shown during the Endurance competition was embarrassingly poor. However the policing/vetting was vigorous, and the competition which was run over very tough going (wet clay, sandy beaches etc.) appeared to avoid any horses being allowed to carry on beyond their capabilities. Three riders including the one mentioned above ended up in hospital. |

I have been able to record the highlights and have really enjoyed the dressage and para-dressage but I'm afraid the reigning I thought was awful-overweight big men galloping flat out ,spinning at great speed and the sliding stops on ponies that were much too small for them,the poor horses were almost sitting on the ground!
The riding of some of the endurance riders left a lot to be desired too.One of the endurance horses collapsed and died also.I agree though didn't hear the word "arab " mentioned once.
Haven't managed to watch any of the cross country just caught a bit of the dressage phase and the jumping today.
It is good to have something horsey on though change from football!Think the vaulting and showjumping is on this week. |

How tragic for Harry Meade poor lad, have to admit I can't watch eventing or National Hunt racing. And yes I know a horse can be fatally injured galloping around its home paddock but I want them all to die of old age. It's just how I am, I know I'm nuts. |

Ive not watched much as I dont have sky. I did catch some of it yesterday in the cafe when I was at the dressage. Was sorry to hear about Harry Meades horse collapsing fatally just after the xc phase. I have to say though, there were a few that looked positively knackered! They were climbing the fences and should of been pulled up imo. I tired horse is a risky one in xc. I missed Harrys but apparently it looked well.

Can't upset me I know nothing about GB team or the sport to be honest. However, I do feel I know you well enough to trust your judgement on animal welfare. |

I have not managed to watch any, and today our telly has gone bonkers for some reason. The endurance team i would not of watched as one of the team members leaves a very bitter taste in mine and others mouth,s after the way their horses were treated when up by me and i really do not think they deserved to be there riding for our country, sorry if this comment upsets people. |
