Can I ask people rug size and saddle length for their Arabs
Mr T's only 5'6 in a rug (poss grown a bit over summer) and I debating if I can get away with a 17" saddle without actually getting one to try on him. |

Posted - 28 Aug 2014 : 3:01:51 PM Thank you everyone :) I spotted a 17" ideal saddle that had a saddle company adjustable tree fitted in it. Decision got taken out of my hands anyway as was outbid. Probably best I would have been gutted if it was to long :) |

Posted - 27 Aug 2014 : 6:14:51 PM I bought a 14" synthetic adjustable gullet saddle for my 11.2 Sect A. It was too big in every direction. I measured it and it was 14". When I spoke to my (very experienced and respected) master saddler he advised me to buy a 15" leather saddle sight unseen off the internet. After the 14" fiasco I was very dubious but did so and it fits beautifully.
Similarly my boy 15.3 arab is in 6.3 rug and 17" saddle. The same saddler had told me to buy a 17 1/2 inch saddle as the larger panels would distributed the weight more. I was concerned this would be too long, got the 17" and now I have it realise the 17 1/2 would have been better....
So my motto now is always to ask the expert!!! |

Posted - 25 Aug 2014 : 6:37:19 PM I have a 14.2 in 5ft9 or 6ft rugs-he seems to fit both quite well. He was backed in a wintec 16.5 but when the saddler fitted him in a saddle company their 16.5 seemed tiny so he has a 17 inch. I don't know why different saddles should measure differently but they did seem to
He is in an extra wide |

Posted - 25 Aug 2014 : 1:15:27 PM I'm not sure that rug size is a very good guide to saddle length.
For example I have two that are in 5ft9 rugs. One is shorter and quite a chunky type, who is wide between the front legs with an ample bottom. She actually has quite a short back and I have her in a size 4 solution, if she had a treed saddle then 16.5 would be the longest you could fit on her. My second arab is taller, narrow in the chest and has a smaller bottom. The size 4 solution fits on him easily as his back is longer, so he's able to take a longer treed saddle than she is.
So i have two horses that I can swap rugs with (in fact I hardly even need to adjust the surcingles if I use one of 'hers' on him, or vice versa), but their saddle needs are different. |

Posted - 25 Aug 2014 : 10:03:34 AM Ekilibr is 148cm 5'9" and would take a 17" saddle, so would his daughter Little Kira 155cm in a 6ft rug. TU Champion is 158cm in 6ft rug (some makes 5'9") and has a 16,5" saddle, very few saddles he could take a 17" but I don't need it so I don't see the point....
funny how 17,5" seams to be the normal in UK where as the rest of Europe is struggling to get bigger then 17" on their Arabs, and most cant fit anything bigger then 16,5" in Denmark....
I had a friend here in UK with Arabs and a ridden boy she has 17,5" and even a 18" they by no means fit the horse length wise but they fit her so she says they fit him too.... I've been told I need a 17,5" for ridden showing as judges prefer that, if that's the case I'd rather not show then let anyone ride my horses in a saddle that's too long
edited to add, depending on make of saddle Champ is anything from medium/ wide to extra wide.. Ekilibr wide or extra wide. |

Posted - 23 Aug 2014 : 2:20:58 PM Lily is 15.3hh, 6 foot rug, and 17.5 inch saddle (wide), she is long backed for an Arab and could take a bigger saddle, but an 18 inch is too big for me .
Not an Arab, but my very chunky 14.1hh Welsh x tb is incredibly close coupled, takes a 5'6"/5'9 rug depending on brand and is in a 16.5 inch xw saddle. |

Posted - 23 Aug 2014 : 2:09:13 PM Ari 15.2hh and measures 6ft in rugs but too tight on neck and withers so in a 6'3" and saddle 17.5 med/wide. Saddler tells me he has a good wither for an Arab Don't under estimate how much they grow then continue to mucle up to at least 7 or 8 years old. |

Posted - 23 Aug 2014 : 2:05:07 PM Spider is 14.3 very fine, 5ft 9 rug and 16.5 inch saddle (but it has been adjusted to give me more room in it than it would otherwise give by clever saddler) Marvin 15.1 not at all fine (!) still 5ft 9 inch rug and 17 inch saddle |
