Hi All AL-ers!
I'm completely new to this forum stuff so do please forgive my ignorance and any errors!
As my username suggests, I am now completely horseless, (and loathing it) having had the worst equine luck the past few years I've now decided to save up and finally get the horse of my dreams (as opposed to the ones of my past that I've taken on because they needed re-homing etc. etc.)
So I plan to use the next 12 months to save up my hard earned cash (seems weird that I still have "spare cash" 10 days after being paid, it used to disappear quicker than you could blink!)
What I want to know or get a rough idea from you knowledgeable people is how much should i be looking to save up for a black arab filly or mare between the ages of 2 - 6 years old, unbroken 15hh - 15.2hh maximum?
I'm not looking for anything to dominate the showing world with (really not my thing) just something to do a bit of low level riding club stuff, hacking and most importantly be a fun, equine friend.
Am I describing a "mythical creature" and are breeders happy for their "produce" to go to such un-aspiring people?
Sorry for the rambling, just voicing some questions before I start saving and wasting anyone's time :o)

Hi all,
Thanks for the useful replies, I am really grateful.
Not heard anything back from the lady with the Arab mare for loan (can't say I blame her as we are pretty much at opposite ends of the UK).
I'll just keep saving and wait for what the future brings, just need to keep telling myself "no more sob stories, must be logical & keep saving."
Weather that actually happens is anyone's guess lol
Thanks again everyone :o)

There are some black Arabians advertised on the egb website for 1500. Title of ad is "stunning endurance youngsters for sale".
Good luck in your quest. I was looking for a chestnut mare, crabbet stock, and with a practical head, not too dishy. Ended up with a grey gelding with a very pretty head, he is crabbet though! I love him to bits. Conformation and temperament were the deciding factors for me.
Pasch Posted - 12 Oct 2013 : 12:05:56 AM
Ah ah Linda my boys are the same!Armos is almost white and manages to almost stay so,Pasch the bay is caked with mud!
Callisto Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 10:13:27 PM
Pasch, the english equivalent saying is that a good horse is never a bad colour, and it is so true.

Lily is a very pale grey already, but she seems to have a fairly teflon coat, and stays remarkable clean considering , our bright bay likes to coat himself with far more mud - he's part hippo I think!
Pasch Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 9:29:16 PM
Hi and welcome!I'm from Italy and we have a saying that, loosely translated goes:if the horse is good and beautiful, don't look at breed or colour. My first arab is a bright bay,I never liked greys but here I am now with a grey gelding,he's a real star and I like greys now!If you had bad experiences with greys before,it's a coincidence and certainly not due to their coat! Also, grey is the commonest arab colour
May I ask, were your previous horses arabs?
Of course I hope you find your black arab,or your perfect horse anyway!Waiting for updates!
Ari Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 8:18:01 PM
Welcome to AL. Lots of good advice posted already, keep your eye out for black and yes there is a higher price to be paid but if that's what you want go for it. At the same time keep an open mind and spread your net wide because my limited experience of buying two Arabs in 30 yrs is that the right horse will find you. My Crabbet lady was a naf advert in the local paper pets column (back in 1985) and a friend persuaded me to give her a look and I knew the minute I saw her it was right, turned out my farrier lived next door to the breeder so saw both parents before purchase, that is fate and I had 27yrs with her. When we were looking for a youngster we looked in all the "established" advertising options, considered many and looked at a few well below description . Ari was in very unlikely free-ads paper and my daughter spotted him by chance, looked up his breeding and rang me at work to say "we have to give to see him" he lived up to expectations in temperament and conformation when we saw him, again I think fate.

I don't envy you the most stressful time for me is horse shopping, both times buying my 2 Arabs I was up and down the country like a crazy thing!!!
Keep us updated

Welcome to AL, I found the Arab of my dreams, good luck with finding yours!
As others have said black horses probably are more expensive as there aren't as many of them but hopefully one will come your way.

We are very good at egging people on here at AL, as you now know! Hope the enquiry is fruitful, but if not there are a lot of lovely horses out there, and you will be chosen! I wanted a 15hh Chestnut or Bay gelding, between 6 & 8 years old. I ended up with a 16hh 4 year old grey filly! She's 8 now and I wouldn't swap her

Unicorn122

You like greys ... take her .. little madam she is, I keep saying, Willooowwwww, pack your rugs, and your pills and potions and take your fat backside; and your bad attitude and just s0d off.

Then she flutters her little white eyelashes and wickers ... and all is well again.

"I have sent a reply to the advert for the Black Arab mare for long term loan"

Based on the time of your first and last post, I make that just about 24 hours

unicorn122 Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 2:11:26 PM
Liver Stunt! he he.

Pop I'm the opposite - I always wanted a grey!
Typical of inpractical me, who always goes for white clothes/handbags/furniture then always manages to get it dirty!!!
OH calls me a walking stain

wouldnt swap my little chestnut now - hes made me a ginger fan
Horseless Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 2:02:39 PM
I have to confess having a quadruple hat trick of bad experiences with greys in my younger years which categorically put me off them for life.

I have 4 beautiful Chestnuts, my favourite colour, one is a bright chestnut, another is a very dark bay, one flea bitten grey and a vari-grey. Of course, I would never have a grey, promised myself, no greys - ever.
Horseless Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 1:00:18 PM
Hi All,

thsanks again for your replies, Debs & Misshana please don't tempt me, I know it wouldn't take much (wonder if its a certain gene thats common in horsey people).
I'm not in any hurry and like a lot of people said the horses tend to choose us.
Thanks again everyone for your advice I am truly grateful :o)
Callisto Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 11:06:56 AM
Mags, can't you put a deposit down and secure the horse until next month?
littlearabians Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 10:40:01 AM
people I know breeding black would ask you £3000-£5000 for a weanling filly for your needs if she was black.... where as a horse with the same conformation and possibly better pedigree would cost you about £2000-2500 if grey, bay or chestnut at other breeders stables.
littlearabians Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 10:35:33 AM
quote: Its true what you say though, a good horse comes in any colour & I shouldn't have a preference but its just something I've wanted since I first came across the breed many, many moons ago.

Black beauty and the black stallion has a lot to answer for...

I don't care if a horse is blue, green or orange.... I prefer bright bays but would NEVER put colour as priority.... MANY who breeds black still thinks they can make a lot more due to colour, and breed for just that, colour, over everything else.... there a some black breeders out there that does care about conformation and so on, but there are still a large group just wanting black.

if you want black you may very well still have to pay more as some people think they are worth more... fact is black was unwanted in the dessert as they don't get rid of the heat as well as other colours, and this is the reason there wasn't many blacks about.... that has all changed there are now 1000s of black Arabs about..... price well 2 years ago I know of 2 blacks sold ridden gelding 3000 euro and backed broodmare in foal 2500 euro....

My iPad has a sense of humour. I was looking for a liver chestnut not a liver stunt horse lol
Gail Posted - 11 Oct 2013 : 09:52:28 AM
Hello,

I agree you may end up with a different colour. My dream is a liver he stunt Arab. I have a bay, a grey and a youngster who is chestnut going grey lol wouldn't change any if them.

My bay gelding s by AH Kuda who is a beautiful black.

Good luck,

Gail x

Have a look on the sales section, homes wanted for horses. There's a black Arab mare for loan.
Kes Posted - 10 Oct 2013 : 10:45:32 PM
Hi and to Arabian Lines, I have no idea of the price of black Arabs, but they do come up here and there, and of course, there are studs specifically breeding blacks.

I do think though, as others have already said, that the right one will find you, they are quite clever ya know, Carole :)
