I am thinking winter and can't face being cold on long days at the yard. Would really appreciate tried and tested advice on what jackets are very warm, waterproof, comfy to ride in and preferably washable. |

Thanks to all for your great feedback and advice. I do see the plus side of winter, Christmas and a childhood love of snow but it's only since I turned 50 thermal vests became an exiting purchase lol. |

I have a Rambo coat and it is RUBBISH! After 6 months the inside of the sleeves came away, and the zips broke.
Rambo rugs much better! |

I find ski-wear/ walking wear is better, Regatta is cheap in outlets.
For a bit more luxury I love Kingsland quilt jackets :)

I remember the Rockfish jacket, well now I do anyway! The only sleeved one I have isn't lined at all so has no thermal properties, it's the Equisafety BS approved one, but even on mildly warm days with some quick riding it can get damp inside - being polite here. It's just a shell really, not breathable, but it is rainproof. I wouldn't say it was one of my best purchases if anyone is thinking about getting one.

Kes I have the puffa type Hi Viz Rockfish jacket, that is certainly warm enough in the winter, got mine cut price on eBay a year ago. |

Mountain Horse jackets are always super duper warm... I bought the Mountain Horse Burlington jacket last year and my god, it's so warm I could only wear it on the really freezing days!
And it's a very bright orange... Almost luminescent!!
Also have another Mountain Horse jacket, which is about mid thigh, and also extremely warm. But I think it is probably coming to the end of it's life, I've had that for about 8 years now, and it's been shared by me and Mum... Extra wear and tear for our jackets, as we wear them for the dogs as well as the horses.
But Mountain Horse never seems to disappoint!
Oh, I bought a Welligogs long waxed leather coat at Blenheim.
Expensive, but completely waterproof and windproof, and I the style of Victorian riding coats.
Very stylish, I am completely taken with it!

Debs, my sockies have thermal ratings, I don't do cold feet!!
Thinking about it, is there a really good, warm jacket with a BS high viz rating? I have 3 HV jackets/ waistcoats, I wouldn't rely on any of them for warmth.

Do you have any shops around that is selling all kinds of safety gear ?
I bought my jacket in one of these shops - it is one, that road workers etc. wear during winter.
It was much cheaper than a brand you can by in a horse shop. |

Ive a Mountain Horse one. Ive had it about 6/7 years now so cant remember the style or if they still make it but its still going strong. Its about mid thigh length, not too heavy in weight, has a hood (albeit a bit of crap one), extremely waterproof and is had a removable fleece lined gillet which is worn on a very regular basis. I love the jacket...storm hates it! lol. He bucked me off at end of last year as soon as I got on with it as it is a bit noisy. |

Wow, it's fab, and really quite nicely styled also - given my gadget fetish I might have to ask Father Christmas, although of course, would be rude not to have the matching apparel for ones horse!!

Yes it heats up, rather than flashes brightly, I assume it doesn't electrocute you when it gets wet...

P.S. Not sure why it needs a remote control...must have been designed by a man, they seem to love remote controls

My Mother-in-law has a battery powered 'electric' jacket for wearing up to the yard!! No idea who makes it or what it cost. She is in Aberdeen though.

I bought a new Musto last year and it never leaked, was always warm, has a removable gilet and looked smart.
The only thing I didn't like about it, and this can happen with a lot of jackets of this length, when I was riding in it, in rising trot I sat back down on the rear flaps which was annoying as I could feel it pull down the back. I later changed the back of it to having the flaps flapping, as appose to together if that makes sense! |
