My newest quarter horsre has been a bit 'different' She was very poor when she arrived at christmas, so I did not want to do much with her until she put some weight on. She is only four now anyway.
Today was our first ride out without company, what an interesting mare. As long as I let her go along at her own pace which could be a fast walk or steady trot she is fine. When I stopped her to turn for home she got the brakes on. Completely refused to budge.
After turning her in both direction she decided to move forwards again. I can cope with this and I am sure things will improve but I have never had a horse refuse to go home!!!
I can see longer rides will be planned in future. Any ideas folks? FOLKS? |

Great pictures, you both look relaxed I'm sure she will improve over the next few months when she gets out and about more. |

Lovely pictures of a relaxed and happy horse. Can't help with the not wanting to head for home other than its a positive in that she enjoys being out and about. I much prefer horses that take the plant and refuse to move option, it's 100% safe and easy to deal with. Can still remember my boy seeing his first hand glider coming down the moorside, boy was I pleased he refused to move a muscle in any direction until it had gone. |

Very funny pop, Perhaps she will make an endurance horse. Lol to circular rides SuziQ and Callisto but I'll have to go a bit further up the track, no she doesn't pull if I try to slow her down on the way out martha and she is only in a halter.
I haven't had the luxury of a companion horse yet but she seemed to like walking out in hand. I think I will do more of the lead some ride some so that her back and ickle legs can build up slowly.

I think this sounds a very interesting, lovely horse! Can you stop her while she is heading out or does she snatch the reins and say, "Nope, I'm in charge, lady!"?
Because if she does this, she is actually my chestnut mare in QH clothes trying to escape from my clutches.....
I have a lot less leadership in the saddle with Esme than I do on the ground. She is fine to hack out on her own but she can get a little nervy at times, like most horses that are not used to hacking out. That doesn't bother me as it will come with time. What DOES bother me is that she does not like my input when she is on a mission. So, if she is heading for lush grass and wants to eat, she doesn't like me interfering with her. If I am getting on her, she uses this as an opportunity to walk (quickly!) toward whichever thing she finds interesting. She does this in both directions, I think. So, I have to practice getting on and off without her having a little "run away with rider at walk" moment. I am sure this is a result of my lack of leadership.
By contrast, your horse sounds keen, that's all. Just a nice explorer. I think this is common in QHs. I want one....!!!!! |

My lad has always gone at a slower pace once we have turned for home. Never known another like him, always had ones that go up a gear when homeward bound. We have done 15 years like this always tried to do circular routes other wise the homeward journey is very painful and he uses delay tactics too like stopping to look at the scenery and itching his nose on his legs. Anything to make the ride last longer.  It's not even as though its the yards I'm on that he doesn't like because he has done this all his life from various homes. He just likes being out and about.  |

Agree with Pop - keep going! (But have a circular return route mapped out before you set off, so that you don't keep going until you reach the sea!)
PS When I had Buzz on a livery yard in Scotland aged 5 he was very nosey (still is) and likes to explore every track (which can come as a surprise when you are trotting along and he suddenly disappears up a drive or footpath that you hadn't noticed, or suddenly climb up a large bank for a better view). He never wanted to go home either, which I thought was just him, however since I brought him back down South he still loves to explore, climb on top of things etc., but behaves like a normal horse about going home. I came to the conclusion that he didn't like the livery yard, so he didn't want to go there, I could be wrong about that of course, and I am certainly not saying that your girl hates her home. I think it is more likely she is just curious about the big wide world |

Millie does this if she doesn't think shes gone far enough she will refuse to go home I find circular routes offer the best solution if I want to do a shorter ride which at the moment is better for me because my hip still hurts from falling off her 3 weeks ago!
Well done on the solo though, mine aren't going very well, shes turned into an opinionated madam, threatening to buck and refusing to go up certain paths, am really hoping the hoof boots help. |

That is strange! Presumably she knew where she was and was heading for home? Is she happy in company or walking out in-hand?
