Having been bitless for years I've entered a one day event and need to bit up for the dressage part. Now in the past when we've had the odd re-entry into the showing world I've used a ported bit. Which is a no go as they are running under BE rules.
Clip has a really fat tongue, any suggestions please?

Sorry Clippi, I think I hijacked your thread a bit! Anyway, glad you're sorted :)

I found a fair few bitless dressage clips on youtube, I even watched a bit of the Bitless
Dressage Championships of 2013

Thankyou for all your suggestions. I've hunted out an old French link snaffle that's made from plastic- not happy mouth as it's thinner but that sort of thing, which he has gone ok in, so that will do for the dressage phase before I swap for his usual bitless.
I do have a video clip of some higher level bitlss dressage somewhere, I'll see if I can hunt it out

Really Debs, I might go hunting for it later if I have time. I've no desire to do bitless dressage myself, well not currently anyway!! But it does interest me, and as already aired here, I think others are as well :)

Yes there was something I saw it was on you tube

Dressage is daft really, you are not allowed to use your voice or bitless..... should be more that way in my opinion!

BUT you are allowed to tie the mouth up and use sppurs..... backwards

Quarabian, do you know, or anyone else of course, if anyone has EVER completed a dressage test bitless, obviously it wouldn't be under the rules as such, but has it been done? I'd be interested to see it if someone knows a youtube link? I mean at the higher levels, seems unfair that other disciplines can choose their brakes but not in dressage, seems a bit limiting at all levels though, as this post points out if someone wasn't to be successful in making the swap.

I want bit free dressage competions please.

I am currently using the Neue Schule Baucher snaffle (has a lozenge in the middle) for my fat tongued Arab, I went that way because she goes best in a pelham but I wanted to get away from the double reins and it applies a bit of poll pressure. She likes the Salox metal it is made from and has a wet mouth, and it is dressage legal. It comes in different thicknesses (if that's the right way to describe it??). I would also recommend using a bit bank, as experimenting with various options can get expensive.

You could try a Sprenger Duo. It is similar to Nathe but it has a shaped area to allow for tongue relief.I ride bitless most of the time , my Arab seems happy and soft mouthed in the Duo. Being a soft mullen mouth it is a great lightweight mild bit to go back to. Flexible and allowing.
You could Google for reviews.

I use Neue Schule mainly but my Arab mare has a Myler, all mine are DR legal bits, some loose ring and some, you can hire them from the bit bank to try them first, give them a ring they are very helpful, the Myler i have is loose ring with a joint in the middle and has tiny copper bars in it , she was very fussy but loves this one. I had a private session with Hilary Vernon from Myler and she picked the right bit for my TB mare when she was eventing, very useful , she also had a fat tongue :) we went with the Myler eggbut with joint in the middle for DR then the same but with hooks on for SJ and XC. Good luck, nowadays there are so many to choose from

Dressage bradoon snaffle?
Freya has been in one, and it's a nice quiet bit [I know any bit can be severe] Or a Neue Schule trans angles universal snaffle? They're lovely xxx
