Thinking of moving Baz to a new yard, only question i have is his stable will be a 12x12 field shelter type with a gated front to it, the gate is boarded from inside to prevent legs going where they shouldn't. It sheltered so bedding won't blow about or get soaked.

Thoughts please i am so used to traditional stable doors that are part of a four walled construction.

This is the only con the pros are fab

one of our barns has nine boxes all with 12 foot gates, a couple are half boarded with rubber in case we need to put any youngsters in them, but the older horses have always used them and like them, we've not had any problems in 15 years, obviously we are a bit sensible and wouldn't put weaned foals or silly youngsters in them, we use the traditional doors for those jobs!

We have one....we just make sure in the winter its facing away from the way the harsh winds blow. In the summer they go in and out as they please.

Splash's stable is enormous and has a large iron gate on it... We took it instead of a regular stable because at the time she had to come in out of the sun and it was the only stable with shade all day.
She now loves it and dislikes normal stables.
Absolutely nothing wrong with gates xxxx

I would keep his out door rug on as well to keep him warm from the bad weather if we get ant this year!

A boarded gate will be heavier to manage so agree with Callisto the hinges and fastenings need to be in good order but you will soon get used to it and you may get the weather blowing rain or snow in on the odd occasion but that's all cosmetic or easily improved.

You have all the pros of the new yard and a 12x12 stable with lots of light and air so sounds great to me.

Its concrete but i have my own mats.

As long as the bolt/catch works well and the hinges are attached securely so that the gate doesn't drag on the ground I can't see a problem - you've already said that it is boarded, so good from a draught/leg through gate point of view. If it is substantially wider than a stable door you might have to be more careful about entering/leaving the stable in case Baz is the Houdini type, but overall, should be fine.

From a bedding point of view, is it on a concrete base or bare earth? Either way I find that heavy rubber mats work well, with bedding on top.
