Posted - 09 May 2013 : 10:20:09 PM Have been riding Fara for the last two weeks in her micklem bit less. Thought id attached the reins properly. Turns out that they were attached to the wrong bit Too high up the bridle and i probably had less control than if I'd just been riding in a neckstrap!! I've hacked, schooled and been along dual carriage ways like this and she has been great. Just goes to show what a genuine wee horse she is and how polite of her not to comment on what a numpty her owner is..........she is only five..... |

Posted - 13 May 2013 : 11:14:15 AM Thanks Judith Pasch, if I'd realised I probably would have leapt off. Fara is so level headed but I'm not as brave as I used to be..........it's an age thing. The other day I saw a wee pony and trap coming around the corner. My old mare was TERRIFIED of ponies and traps and used to turn and run, so I leapt off Fara (because if I'm on the ground I give her more confidence) and she just stood there while the driver chatted to me. I felt a right ass. Roseanne, you are right about the equestrian price tag.......

Posted - 11 May 2013 : 1:31:22 PM TC I've often thought that - when I was a kid in north Wales, any saddle got put on anyone's pony or horse at the local farms. As for bits, well there probably were only half a dozen even if you had a tack shop where you could find any!
Things have changed a lot and I always think that whatever producers are selling, if they put the word 'equestrian' in front of it, they can practically double the price.

Posted - 10 May 2013 : 11:13:53 PM Goes to show you got a very sensible pony and also how being sure of yourself is paramount-had you know you were riding like that, maybe you would have felt nervous and passed it on to the horse. at Judith! |

Posted - 10 May 2013 : 4:10:02 PM THANKYOU. isn't it funny, thirty years ago we just put any old saddle on them any old bridle and off we galloped.............never got teeth or backs checked either. Our poor ponies!!! Now I'm worrying about rubbing her mane and hurting her pretty little mouth. |

Posted - 10 May 2013 : 3:46:41 PM We used to sell biothane tack made by a lady in the States... her rubber grip reins were FAB... musch softer than any I have seen in the UK... Let me see if I can find her link... |

Posted - 10 May 2013 : 3:06:22 PM I use half rubber ones, so they are leather from the bit too the withers then rubber for grip :) |

Posted - 10 May 2013 : 3:03:24 PM Haha, Judith. That's a good one too!! Took her out this morning and we had it fitted correctly this time. Walk, trot and canter no problem. She is such a wee star. However the only reins thin enough to attach are rubber ones which rip at her mane so we had some really fetching pink vet wrap around the reins on her mane side. Looked a bit weird but worked just fine. If anyone can recommend grippy reins that don't wreck manes, let me know peeps.
