My poor boy has a sore bum. Well actually I dont think it is sore, more irritated. I think hes been bitten by something just below his anus. Its came up like a bubble/blister. The underside of his tail is sticky and slightly swollen as is patches either side of his tail.
Phoned vet and had to wait ages for them to phone me back.
He was fine last night although he did do something funny when I was riding him. He lifted his tail/back and slowed like he was about to poo but didnt. Then he carried on as normal. Today I noticed this swelling when I brought him in from the field at tea time.
There is a discharge coming from the left side of the blister/bubble. Its clear, sticky with a slight yellowish colour. No smell.
Vet thinks it sounds like a reaction to a bite. Think the discharge has caused the underside of his tail to become to slightly swollen and then with him swishing it, its caused the bits either side to react too.
Wish I knew what it was. He broke out in hives this time last year in a localised area across his barrel after being turned out with no rug for one day. Couldnt get rid of it until november last year.
He was swishing his tail less by time I left. Had also peed/pooed, eaten his dinner and tearing into his haynet.
Do you get a particular type of fly about at this time of year?

Glad for Storm. You haven't missed anything if you never saw a tick, they are quite disgusting especially when bloated with blood !!!

I dont mind you hijacking, lol. I dont think Ive ever seen a tick. Sounds painful.

Storm is fully recovered. Underside of his tail is a bit raw looking from being rubbed but everything else is back to normal.

Yes Linda it IS horrible-poor boy, today swelling under armpit had almost gone but sheath was huge,he didn't look happy!Ticks still there so I sprayed him with a special product supposed to kill all kind of bugs...I remember we walked in the middle of very tall grass must have been when they got on him...now have to find something to use so that he won't get them again, any ideas?
Vik1,sorry to highjack your thread, how's your boy?

Pasch that sounds horrible - hope they all suffocate asap and that the swelling goes down. The insects here have been slowed down by the cold weather, but they are beginning to appear.

Just come back from the yard to find Armos with a big swelling behind an armpit with a tick on top of it,another tick next to his anus, and a few more on his sheath especially behind where it's difficult to check unless you touch and more swelling...Must have been from last hack because Pasch didn't have any, I did check him but hadn't seen any, maybe they were still climbing up in his hairSmothered them with oil so they suffocate and fall off by themselves without leaving head in.Swelling wasn't painful to touch.Hate ticks!!!They are also vectors of a malaria-like disease...I am afraid with all the rain this year will be awful insect-wise...

Im going with fly of some sort. It has been very windy here though and temp is about 10-13c during the day.
Anyway, good news is it looked alot better today. Swelling right down. The discharge had came out and went a yukky dry yellow colour and think hed rubbed the underside of his tail. So Ive got it all off, gave it a wash with mild hibiscrub. Wasnt bothered at all about me touching it. The main bubble bit had a scabby bit from the discharge. Got that off and it was a bit raw underneath. Think that is where he has been bitten. So Ive smothered his bum with good ol sudocrem! Hes got nappy cream on his bum Big baby! lol

I would think insect bite reaction as well.We have lots of flies and mozzies down here but it's the tropics
Pasch had a swollen sheath a couple of times in the past,it was enormous and quite awful to see but went down by itself,I only cold showered him. Those areas are more sensitive than rest of skin so react worse. If you notice discomfort or it doesn't go down maybe call vet for antibiotics but I think it will go.Maybe no riding as sweating and friction could be irritating?

We had horseflies out and about yesterday and Sunday.
And to me, I would be inclined to think your boy may have been had by one... The way you described it sounds like the reaction Freya had last year and myself. True, not in that area, but the vet gave her a an antibiotic injection close to the area [her chest].
And I'm still scarred from my bite.
Just a thought, I don't know if horseflies are about in your area?
Hope he feels better soon!!

Lots of flies around our part of the world, so very possibly a bite.

I've no idea - seems a bit early for flies, although I have seen a few bees, wasps and midges around. I would be inclined to put something soothing on it like Aloe Vera, but honestly don't know if it would help. Fingers crossed he overcomes it asap.
