I went for a hack with my friends 10 year old daughter yesterday, went through the woods not been out long and heard some dogs barking, then heard the most awful screaming, 5 dogs where just in the thick woods to our left and they were attacking something, at first I thought it was a badger or another dog, we both started shouting to try and scare the dogs off, then I heard people trying to call the dogs I screamed to them to hurry up, two men appeared and managed to get the dogs away I asked him what it was they had got hold off and it was a baby munctjack dear, the poor thing had been ripped to shreds its back leg half hanging, I told the men they just couldn't leave suffering like that, We were still on our horses as I really didn't like the look of those dogs.
The men didn't want to hang about so it was left to us to try and do something so Jodie got off and sat with the deer and I rang her Nan as she was only up the road, she turned up with one of the farriers from the yard and he put it out of its misery.

It really worries me that people let there dogs off to run riot, 5 dogs together will then behave like a pack and if one attacks they all will, they had no control over them what so ever what if it had been someones dog, that poor dear screaming will haunt me it was awful, Jodie was distraught no surprise really but she was a very brave girl staying with the poor thing it was licking her hands bless it.

How ghastly and very distressing for all concerned and RIP the poor deer.

I lost some lambs this spring to dog attack. Those that survived were completely traumatised.

I like dogs but it is really unnecessary and irresponsible for dog owners to let their dogs be completely out of control. They must know what's happened when their dog(s) returns with blood on it.

Oh dear. How dreadful for your young companion, you and, of course, the muntjac deer. Dogs being dogs, but the owners were wholly to blame, by allowing five dogs loose when they were unable to control them. Which admittedly, would have been very difficult if they were packing onto prey.
Disgraceful behaviour by the "men", scuttling off and leaving you and a child with the carnage.
RIP muntjac deer. At least s/he knew compassion and care at the end. Well done for dealing very well with a horrible task and a brave, but very upset, child.

What an awful thing to witness. People need to take more responsibility for their dogs. I've posted on here before about my dog encounters and then last week there was a loose dog left to run free around the childrens playground. The dog was friendly but one child was terrified and her mum started shouting at the dog. The dog was bewildered at being shouted at as although it hadn't really done anything wrong, the owner should never have allowed it off the lead in a childrens playground.

Thank you everyone I have looked into who looks after the wood we ride in and I am going to email them about it, I live opposite the woods and I no longer walk my dog there as quite a few dog walkers use it and I have seen a young girl walking 7 dogs some quite large dogs how on earth can she hold them all? I have had two huge dogs thunder towards my dog who is only 6 months old and it left her terrified so I only go on the farm tracks now and round the crop fields with her.

One of the men did seem shocked by what had happened and he said he had never seen deer in the woods before, he also said the spaniel had a vibrate collar on but it had stopped working, I did say that he shouldn't let it off the lead if it wont be called back in a public place.

What a horrible thing to witness, poor little soul. At least it didn't suffer for long. RIP little deer.

Poor Jodie and poor you, and what 'brave' men not to hang around, the bar stewards. Well done the farrier. Don't know what to say apart from I want to buy you and Jodie chocolate, and run free now little deer.

What a horrible experience for you both. You were very brave to deal with the situation, particularly as those responsible had left you to it. You did all you could for the poor deer and try not to be haunted by it - easier said than done I know.
The dog owners should be prosecuted - hunting with a pack?

How awful..very brave to stay and see that the poor baby was not left to suffer.
Try not to let it haunt you.

I have seen dogs go after other dogs and as you say it is not a pretty sight, on one occasion my own pack interferred by accident as the 3 dogs ran through us, the lead dog grabbed at my Golden Retreiver and my lab took it down. She was still standing over it snarling when the owner turned up shreiking, one word from me and she came and sat at heel and the dog tried to turn on GR again.... she accused me of having an out of control dog?? There are some idiots on the end of leads or rather they should be on the end of the lead!

How absolutely traumatic, but thank goodness you were there to make sure it was put out of it's pain.

5 dogs is definitely too many, even 2 will hunt as a team. I hope you and Jodie can put it behind you as soon as possible. It would haunt me too.
