Hi,

I didn't get my saddle fitted with the use of a wool pad or sheepskin pad, so I am pretty sure I can't use one now as it would alter the fit of the saddle.

However, I think Esme might like a little more cushioning and I am wondering if people here have tried a wool or sheepskin saddle pad that did a good job of this without altering the fit of the saddle.

I think I might get away with a Griffin hi-wither wool pad (though she doesn't have a high wither, I like those pads anyway) as the wool isn't very thick there.

Any other ideas or experience in this area?

Thanks so much in advance!

My boy has an extremely sensitive back. I have used the prolite, various gel pads, you name it I've tried it and always go back to the 5oz wool as my lad 'tells' me in various ways he prefers it.

Also out of everything the wool makes him sweat far less than anything else and it's the only thing that doesn't cause him to have heat lumps.

I have used a prolite pad and was happy that it did not alter the saddle fit. They are thicker everywhere so they seem to raise the saddle up and that in turn dosent make the saddle narrower the fit stays the same.

Okay, sounds like the 5oz would be okay. I would like to try something. I might also get a thicker one close to when the saddler comes back to check the fit (March) as the saddle has "settled" and rather than add flocking I will ask if it is okay to use a pad.

She's a sensitive girl, my mare!

I do have a prolite pad, btw, but I don't quite trust these gel pads.....I like the old fashioned wool if I can use it. Any opinions on the prolite and similar?

Hi I have a Griffin Hi wither with sheepskin under the saddle and cotton on the sides. They come in 5oz and 9oz weights. The 5oz is brilliant for cushioning without bulk. Love mine and the saddler who fitted my saddle suggested it for me and was happy my saddle would still fit.

HI Martha I've just bought a griffin Hi wither pad with a wooly bit under the saddle but quilting under the legs. Its not bulky as the padding both wool and quilt is quite silky - just washed it and it looks like new so can recommend!

It depends on the type of saddle and the way it was fitted to a degree, but anything with more bulk will effectively make the saddle narrower.

Why not try a gel pad from Stephens soft and very thin with little holes in it,I dont think it would alter the saddle fit much at all.

My saddler advises a thin numnah, not thick as saddle will be too tight...
