Hi AL's,

Wondered if any of you made cider and if so what you did with the left over apple pulp...

I made 10 litres yesterday from a horse food size bag of apples, [some cider, some dessert apples] and am left with a large bucket full of pulp after pressing.
Supposed to be good for pigs... but don't keep them... or have read that it is appreciated by chickens... but my 7 ex-batts don't think much of it....

4 year old arab Cotswolds Amirah thinks its great - she had a bowl mixed in with her evening feed but am worried that feeding too much could caused colic or even laminitis as may be high in sugar even with the juice extracted.

A friend suggested I baked some horse treats so oven is on a low heat and house smells of apples baking.

Have loads more fresh apples to process so any thoughts/recipes that allow me to make something that will keep and can be feed gradually- [or given as pressies to other horse owners] would be welcome.

I was told that acid is a problem because horses have soft enamel on their teeth and the combo of acid/sugar causes erosion. I would think that much of the acid and fructose would be pressed out of the pulp, what you're left with is pretty much fibre albeit soggy fibre. The apple horse cakes sound pretty good.

Try dividing it up into smallish portions, perhaps in ice cream containers and freezing it..!! Then use as required.. Could it be used in pies?

Tried to follow image posting instructions... but don't think it's worked....

Thanks Pasch, but it is not the apples I need to store, it's the pulp - a leftover product of cider making that I'm trying to find a safe use for.
Far too nice to throw on the compost heap.

I had a look in my kitchen cupboards and found some soya bran so mixed this with the semi-cooked pulp and some corn oil, then formed this mix into palm size balls, flattened them and left them to bake on a low heat for a couple of hours..

Voila ! - Apple Horse Cakes- [will attempt to post a photo]
They should keep O.k - and taste fine to me and horses approve- should I be concerned re acidity ?

I have been told you shouldn't give more than a couple of apples a day because they are too acidic, and best not every day.
I am sure your house smells wonderful now!Apples can last a long time kept in the right way so you can use them yourself I guess.Dry apple slices can be a nice horse and human treat!
