Can a 13.2hh gypsy cob type pony with good bone carry 11 stone comfortably?

That made me smile Glo.. our 13.2hh is very much a and quite often

He is also very strong and not at all suitable for a child to ride. We thought he would calm down as he got older but no chance...! He will be 20 in March and is still a mad fast ride

I do know that the upper limit for Exmoors is 12st and they only grow to about 12.2 or 3 if you have a big one!!! so a 13.2 cob would be fine with 11st.

Remember that cobs can be very sharp and in my experience "cob headed" so you may not get the quite cob you think you are getting!!! they also turn in to race horses if you do to much fit-er-ning (cant spell) work with them!!

Yes the pony should b able to carry you with no problem.

I had a 13.2hh New Forest Pony that carried me hundreds of miles over some tough terrain (Exmoors Golden Horse Shoe) never failed the vetting and always completed his rides.

He carried international weight of 11st 11lbs

'Good bone' is a bit misleading - in a gypsy cob type, they may have more of it than an Arab, but the fact is that they need more because it is not of as such god quality. The bone of heavy mixes (which is what the so-called 'gypsy' types are) is more spongy and less able to carry weight unless there is a lot of it, whereas Arab bone is very dense and up to more weight even those there will be less of it.

Why not get a 14.2hh weight carrier? I have a vested interest I'm afraid, but this one will let you get your confidence so that you can work with your arab. Have messaged you.

I have no idea, but I do know that in the frequent discussions on such topics I've read (because I started a 13.0 pony years ago and was paranoid I was squashing him -- I did not) apparently what makes a big difference is the skill and balance of the rider, and the fit of the saddle. You want wide panels that cover as much as is possible on the pony. Much of the problem with gypsy cob types is there isn't a lot of "real estate" that is rideable on those short backs.

Talk to the icelandic people and they'll give you good ideas, I think!

Well that's good to know, I'm considering getting a little coloured pony to back and then have some fun on and teach my OH to ride on. My youngster is starting to make me nervous so I think some work with another horse might help my confidence as it's been a long time since I rode or worked with horses!

Yes from me too... We have a 13.2hh fell x welsh pony and he carried me no problem when I was 11 stone. In fact I hunted with him for a good few hours with no problem

Yes from me as well

In my opinion yes.
