Mine has slightly dodgy conformation Cinnypony, and still manages to compete perfectly happily but I wouldnt ride the longer distances as I dont want to break him. Its a shame because he has a great work ethic, hes FAST and mentally is up to any distance (definitely not unionised!)
So basically you need both.
Now for a gratuitous photogragh

Agree re any breed, as Esther you have summed it up re Spud calling the union - it's alot about the mentality of the horse.

And also the less flat and more rugged the ride, the more there is an even playing field as no one can go so fast, so something hardy and nimble is good

What Esther said! My first endurance horse was arab x TB x welsh C. Whilst she didn't have the turn of speed that my pure bred has, she always did really well on the harder rides in tougher conditions. That pony part always managed to find an extra leg if needed. she did phenomenally well and it was only advancing years that made me decide to slow down with her.

My pure bred is much faster and would probably have coped superbly on the flatter rides of East Anglia. Having moved to Devon though, she's having to learn to SLOW DOWN and cope with tougher conditions. The ultimate target is GHS so our training has changed considerably. So yes, breeding and attitude matters, but as important, if not more so, is conditioning and correct training.

You absolutely don't need an arab and not all arabs are good at endurance. Our Spud loves the lower to medium distance stuff but he'd be calling t'union if you set him at a longer one. He may have a turn of speed on him but he is intrinsically idle and life is on his terms

Flurrie, who was national supreme champion last year and in 2007 and has done several 100 milers is an overheight connie. You do get quite a few natives and native crosses out there, and although the arabs do tend to do better at the faster type of ride, it's no co-incidence that the further north you head the more natives you see - they're built for the terrain

For an all round endurance horse you can't go far wrong with an arab x native (JMO )

Beautiful! They made me cry!! Beautiful Arabians doing what they do best!!

At top levels - arabs, anglos, pba's, thoroughbreds and I think there may be some akhal-tekes.

At national levels most breeds can manage graded rides - at this years Golden Horseshoe there was a Haflinger in the 120k class and Exmoors in the 80k class. Also my friend did up to 40k on her Icelandic.

However arabs are extremely common - so if you have one with good conformation, it's a fab way to build a relationship and spend time with your horse.

Any breed can do Endurance. You do not need an Arab

It is great fun at all levels.

That looks like fun! It's lovely to see. I don't know much about endurance but I do know that Arabs are a popular breed for the discipline, what other breeds are commonly used?

Great to see all the videos and lovely pictures. I was there but it is nice to watch again.

There's another good video of the start here

And there are a number of other videos posted by the american team, showing their horses trotting up/leaving vet gates http://www.youtube.com/user/2012USEnduranceWEC?feature=watch
