I'm just looking at turnout rugs for my new horse (as most of Rupert's went with him) and wondered what people liked. Have just been in the loft and uncovered four old and of dubious water resistance and decided I may have to reinvest...damn it.
I have a Rambo Duo for my tb and love the layering system. I had a bad experience with Premier Equine a few years ago as I bought two rugs with necks, neither necks fitted either of my horses (arab and tb) and they ripped easily...so and suggestions/recommendations welcome.
I saw an Amigo Bravo rug that apparently will work with the Rambo Duo under rugs so that could be an option perhaps? Anyone done that?

Or if anyone is having a clearout of 5ft 9' Amigos or Rambos please give me a shout.
Many thanks in advance

I absolutely love amigos fit around the neck as all other brands are far too wide for him...

Many thanks Linda. I will ring the shop and also look at the Apex.

Barbara, apparently the weatherbeeta Tristar was replaced by the weatherbeeta Apex which apparently has improved features - they have some on the Equestrian Clearance website. Bur they don't have removeable liners which I think the tristar did?

Barbara I have pm'd you with a link to a place that appears to still have Tristars in stock.

Seka has all Horsewares too.

They fit her a treat (15h high crabbet %) and last for ages! Wouldn't look at any other brand for her, never rub never move despite her best attempts

Does anyone know if you can still get the Weatherbeeta Tristar. I bought one last year on a friends recommendation for a horse who is very narrow and difficult to fit and it has done her well but they didn't have a heavy liner and now I can't find them anywhere. Her rug is still like new and I loved the tail flap on it but I really need a heavier liner. I mostly have Rambo Duos but they didn't seem to suit her so want to stick with her Tristar. Alternatively if anyone has a 5 9" they don't need and would like to sell???

Another one for Horseware rugs. Mine have the full range from summer rain sheets upto Rambo heavyweight rugs and all the rug liners fit then apart from the summersheet!!

Never ever let me down and even with all this pouring down rain the sumemr rain sheet hasnt let in water just a little near the shoulder where they put their heads down to graze.

Best investment I ever made buying Horseware

Thanks for all the great tips...I think I have decided to go for the Amigo Brave 12 Turnout Lite with detachable neck, I have a 100g liner put aside and may go for a 300 too and am hoping this covers all bases...until he rips the outer...

I have today been sticking 'gaffer tape' over all the bite marks in my spare arab sized old turnout. So must hurry up and order a new one...also am hoping (as suggested by Linda) that my mum finds this a much easier way to change rugs when I'm not around.

Weatherbeetas - hard wearing and good value for money. Derby House rugs on offer and cheap as chips but do rip easily. Would not have paid the supposed original price of £89.99 for the medium combo but for £29.99 (last week's offer) you can hardly go wrong....they don't last though, you do get what you pay for...

I use the Amigo/Horsewear rugs on all of my horses, PBA, show pony and Irish sports horse. The fit of them is brilliant, never have a problem with rubbing etc. I have them cleaned and re-proofed every year and they always come back like new.
Also have a few Joules (by weatherbeeta) rugs and found these fantatsic rugs also.
We used a weatherbeeta under rug underneath a Rambo duo, just had some attachments sewn in and worked really well!

My girlie is 50% arab, 50% highland so a chunkier arab build. I really like my weatherbeeta middleweight, but was incredibly lucky to WIN a Premier Equine heavyweight rug . Have to say it is a fabulous rug.... I'm almost looking forward to next winter to get it back in use!! In my opinion, a lovely fit (particularly like the elastic top of the neck to stop it blowing down and the high cut around the shoulders), super warm, doesn't rub and very waterproof. It says you can use it as TO or stable rug, which I did on a couple of occasions when pushed for time, so quite useful.

Also have to say what FANTASTIC sales people they have. Like I say, I won my rug and they didn't have the size and colour I had asked for.... I rather assumed they would just give me whatever they had in stock, but they phoned me up, full of apologies, and then upgraded to the next rug!! I was a very happy bunny... and then even more so when they posted it out so I got it the next day Very impressed with them!!

I have to admit i don,t like my Rambo rugs, they have blown up in the gales and find that they slip, tried Amigo and they ripped too easily, used Premier Equine for the first time this year and although the fixed neck didn,t rub her mane too badly it came up small and rubbed her quarters, have gone back to Weatherbeeta freestyle rugs and Fals, do quite like the Masta checktech as they have a strong outer which dose not seem to rip too badly but they have stopped making them i think. i think a lot of it depends on the shape of your horse , best of luck. My Derby house lasted one night, but i do have some horses that are very good at trashing rugs bless them, now try to buy ones with a 1200 or above outer.
annas Posted - 25 Apr 2012 : 7:58:21 PM
Thanks, so theoretically it could work. Duo's are around £300 so it would be considerably less, worth a try I think.
Callisto Posted - 25 Apr 2012 : 7:38:39 PM
I think you could use the liners (or the premier equine liners which are nice) inside a shell with no problem if you attach some fastenings in the right place for the factory added fastenings on the liner (e.g. the premier equine ones would need velcro at the front and the rear fastening clips onto rings on the outer at the back - simples!)

ETA

Actually thinking about it, the liner does up at the chest so you probably don't really need to attach it to the rug at the front, just clip them in place at the back...

Thanks ladies. I loved fals for years and wouldn't have anything else but once I tried the rambo duo I found them heavy particularly when wet. Pauline is that still the case?

I can't afford another duo but wondered if I could make my own version with say a lw Amigo and the horseware liners?
Pauline Posted - 25 Apr 2012 : 7:24:47 PM
I love the Fal rugs ,fit an Arab well.

The other one is the WB

I love Amigo. Mouse had a really good one he ripped all his old rugs before i bought him. But the Amigo put up with such punishment! And it seemed to fit him really well. x
Callisto Posted - 25 Apr 2012 : 7:10:06 PM
I was just about to mention Weatherbeeta's - they fit well and last forever.

I love my Derby House full neck med weight, no rubs or leaks & very good sizing for a Crabbet shaped Ninja! He did manage to rip it but he is a bit of a hoon. Weatherbeaters are good too, Sunny has a 3rd hand one that's been around for years & is still in perfect condition, just bought a lovely lightweight WB for the April showers Amigos are nice rugs but agree with Callisto, get a size up & I'm not keen on the non adjustable chest straps.

Another one for Amigo's and Rambo's but not the new ones the old purple ones!

I love Amigos all of Kirsties are Amigo except the sweet itch hoody which is Rambo butthat was a bit big round the neck so needed a bit of diy.

Lily grew out of her Rambo Duo, so my chunky pony is now wearing it - great rug, but I found the neck piece a bit short.

I currently have a Premier Equine for Lily with a choice of under rugs, it's very tough (hasn't ripped, but she's not too hard on her rugs), but because the 5'9" Duo was too small I bought her a 6' and it's a bit big - had to buy her a smaller neck piece into the PE sale. I like the rug, but it is a bit heavy compared to others (not helped by her height of 15'3", my 5' 70 year old Mum struggles a bit getting it on and off).

Amigos come up small and don't suit 'chesty' arabs, but excellent for my sister's narrow fronted Arab. I would go up a size if you are buying an Amigo.

This winter our entire herd has been wearing Derby House Medium Weight combos except for when it was bitterly cold. No leaks and no rubs, and quite light weight for putting on and off (Essential because when I am away it is my Mum who is doing them every morning). Not the most hardwearing of rugs long term perhaps, but Derby House keep having various sales, 2 for 1 offers, and I have only paid between £25 & £45 for each Combo, by picking and choosing when I bought them, and at that price if they don't make it past 2 or 3 winters then they are practically disposable! I have had to resew the seams on one of them not long after purchase, but the rest have held up fine.

ETA

Today they are offering a 180 gm light/medium combo for £29.99, down from £89.99
