Im hoping to go look at a yard only 3 miles from my house today. It would save me a small fortune on petrol and time. I tried phoning but got no answer and they didnt have voicemail to ask them to phone me back.
Do you think its rude to 'drop in' on yards?

If I knew it was a private house with just a couple of stables to rent, Id never dream of doing that but as this is advertised as a livery yard do you think it would be ok?

I know my yo prefers people to phone and arrange a time. She thinks its rude to just show up, but if you want the business, should you mind??

Well I went to 2 places actually today. maybe Im just a fussy bugger and needing to stop but I didnt think either was suitable :(. Finding a decent yard round here really is like gold dust. Going to have to harass the woman that has the only yard I want every week until she gets me 2 stables, lol.

Yard 1 - I was gobsmacked to find it had 18 horses. I thought it was a really small place. Good big stables but blooming freezing! Was in a big tall shed that was open on almost 3 sides. Velv would need about 4 rugs and bandages on to keep warm. The 'indoor' that he was charging £5/wk for was so small you wouldnt even be able to get a lunge rein out full length across the width of it. He said it was just a temp thing as the outdoor was going to be built in the silage pit soon. Said mine wouldnt be able to get winter turnout unless someone else leaves and I could get there 'space' as he had limited turnout in winter. Horses take it day about to get out. That I wouldnt mind but mine would only be allowed out in this tiny space he had made to put them in while mucking out for example. Then when I said about Velvs teeth and age, he said for likes of her he wouldnt mind her going out everyday...confused! Summer turnout would be 24/7 in excellent fields tho. His prices were also really cheap and it was clean and tidy everywhere.

Then yard no2 - known the lady since I was a teenager but dont know her that well. said I was enquiring about livery and got the 'I MIGHT have space/whos asking/whos it for' response (thought I still had my own place). Bit stand offish so I didnt really like that. One stable was a good size, the other was a bit small. Nothing fancy, quite damp and dingey looking tbh. She showed me a third and didnt like it either. The passageway was really narrow and with Velv blind in one eye I wouldnt trust her not to bump into something and give herself a fright. Storm would need to have the bigger stable cos he is the bigger of the 2 now so Velv would have to have the small one or one with the narrow passageway. The wash bay was tiny and had grooming kits etc...accident waiting to happen with my 2. Plus points - good indoor and outdoor. If they cant get into field in winter then they get into indoor for a play every day. Prices were good also. Summer turnout was 24/7 on ok grazing.

Its soo hard to find a good place. I just want my own place!!

People drop in to enquire where we are and the farmer doesnt mind. As you have tried to contact them I cant see what else you can do,say that you hope they dont mind but you have tried to contact them, and if they do mind perhaps that would give a clue as to how relaxed (or not) the place is.

You could always call in and say you would like to make an appointment to look at the yard (and you could say you had tried to phone but not been able to catch them). It is then up to them to show you round there and then or make an appointment if it isn't convenient for them at the time.

Id say go for it. I did this and its how i got my little yard.

If its a livery yard, I would think it would be fine to just 'drop by,' especially if you said you have tried to ring, you were in the neighbourhood, blah de blah de blah. You are polite enough to have realised that if it was a private yard, you wouldnt be doing so.

People always seem to try and ring me when I'm in the middle of riding so at the end of exercise, I generally have to sit down and return all the calls in my T-break (or should that be called my FB/Twitter/drooling on the internet break)

Once you come face to face with yard owner/manager you can always schedule an appt for a more detailed viewing if they are busy when you 'drop by'

Hope its what you want and you get a place

I don't think it is rude to drop in and say hi, but if you want the tour you might have to arrange another visit. It seems as you have already tried to phone it would be okay to call in.

see this is what I think too. I think its just my yo being a funny bugger. She wont even call someone back if they leave a message on her voicemail. Then again, I think its a confidence issue with her.

What has made me a bit wary about dropping in is that its also a working farm. I dont want to get in their way.
Im meeting a friend for lunch and this yard is just round the corner so we were going to stop by afterwards. Hopefully theyl be someone about.

Provided it is at a reasonable time I don't think it rude ...
phoenixbruka Posted - 05 Feb 2012 : 11:52:35 AM
I don't mind people just "dropping in" to have a look round, just be mindful that if they've loads to do you'll have to walk and talk

I like to arrange appoinments when I've finished mucking the liveries out but as long as you dont mind things not being totally clean and in order 1st thing in the morning then alls well!

It's usually easier to cath people 1st thing as well as I do the yard then over dinner ride or go for feed or lunch etc so most be people know they can def catch me on the yard before 12

I wouldn't think it was rude, after all you are making a polite enquiry so nothing wrong there :)

I wouldn't mind if it was my yard. Also it might be a good thing for them not to expect you, that way you can see it as it really is.

I'd say it isn't rude, like you say if they want the business! As long as you don't drop in really early or late it shouldn't be a problem. Plus that way you see what the yard is really like
