Posted - 31 Jan 2012 : 4:36:42 PM Many will not be aware that HOYS have reduced the number of shows allocated qualifiers in 2012. In 2011 there were fifteen qualifiers and they decided to reduce this number to 12 so three shows have been cut. I have spoken to HOYS and they have stated that they have reduced the qualfiers for all types of breeds not just Arabs but one of the main reasons for the cuts is that they consider that one qualifier should be available for every 12 entries. They have noticed a reduction in the number of entries in HOYS Arab qualifying classes over the last few years (down from the low seven hundreds to the mid four hundreds) and have therefore reduced the number of shows accordingly. Unfortunately they were unaware that the end of the line in the old qualfiers has been directed to the intermediate classes and this in some way explains the reduction in entries. There are three shows that have been cut. One becasue of low entries, one becasue of a technical problem and Wessex Summer Show. HOYS cannot give a reason why Wessex was cut, it was one of the larger shows, did not clash with another show and was not that close to another show especially as one of the nearest shows is another cut show. This means that the only qualfiers south of the M4 in England are the South West Show and the South East Show. Unfortunately unless they can change the date the SE Show is on the same weekend as the Midland Arabian Festival.
HOYS have advised Wessex to apply again for 2013.
The Wessex Summer Show is still a C Show, we hope there will be support for our ridden classes where our judges are Mr Froggatt and Mr Conifey. The show is on 18th August and will be at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire as The Hand is not available for the dates we need.
I will be raising the situation concerning HOYS qualifiers at the next AHS AGM

Posted - 01 Feb 2012 : 3:26:08 PM Sorry HOCON I though your venue was east of the end of the M4.
HOYS said they did look at numbers but if the decision was based on numbers only how many shows have more than the 34 entered at Wessex. We are sure a lot have far less. They could also not explain why they had three qualifiers on the same showground within a short period of time. Midland Festival, National Show and the NPS the week after the Nationals. They did not cut the NPS because they had a lot of positive feedback on that show last year and they did not receive that for other shows. I pointed out that the reason they got feedback was because it was a newly allocated qualifier and exhibitors usually get in touch with the show secretary of the show they enjoy not the organisataion that runs the shows for which the exhibitors have to qualify.
I actually spent a couple of hours talking to HOYS and they came up with all sorts of excuses including blaming one of the AHS judges, the AHS and anyone they could think of before eventually admitting they made the decision themselves.

Posted - 01 Feb 2012 : 2:48:04 PM I wonder if HOYS looked at the entries for each show before the decision .# HOCON is always very well attended. |

Posted - 31 Jan 2012 : 8:34:07 PM Such a shame they have cut the qualifiers. Sadly i did see some shows last year with very low entries in the HOYS classes, not so much the gelding classes, they always seem well supported, but at 1 show i went to i think there were 4 mares forward, possibly a similar amount of stallions. I think its just the current climate that people cant afford to go to as many shows as far away. Very sad. I think Scotland lost its qualifier also due to the lack of entries, I may be wrong but i remember going when they had a qualifier at the Scottish horse show and I think there was about 8 forward in the geldings, which was very low due to other shows, that may have been in 2006 and i think thats the last time Scotland had a qualifier??? |

Posted - 31 Jan 2012 : 7:05:01 PM why are there no qualifiers in Scotland? Perhaps you could also raise that at the next AHS AGM |

Posted - 31 Jan 2012 : 5:20:51 PM Its a massive shame that as well as cut qualifiers, we have two shows clashing with a HOYS qualifier and they are close enough together that people in the south would have travelled to both if going for a ticket.
