I moved my mare to our old home at the weekend - was supposed to happen last Wednesday but the best laid plans have a habit of going awry....
I have been feeding her Silvermoor haylage but we have home grown organic haylage now and she is not impressed. Her net of silvermoor mixed with a little of the home grown was mistakenly given to a visitor yesterday and she was given a net of purely home grown.
I was waiting with her until dad arrived with her rubber matting and the last 12 bales of silvermoor and was able to observe her closely. She repeatedly sniffed the haylage deciding it didn't meet her exacting standards, then gave me "The Look" then the "Head Toss". Before she decided to give me snake neck her dad arrived. She was taking a bite of her own haylage before I had the net tied up which i think was a point being made.
I'm hoping to change her over gradually by mixing in the home grown in greater amounts, but I hadn't anticipated her not accepting it at all and I'm hoping that some of you might have some ideas that I could try.

Thanks Judith. I'm hoping that once she gets the taste of the grass properly she'll naturally prefer the homegrown. |

It can happen between bales from the same field, probably best to do some mixed nets and perhaps the next bale of homegrown will meet with her approval anyway. |
