Hi

Have a question for my fellow ALer's

Having recently moved my horses home I have got some part time help to look after the horses Monday to Friday. How many hours a day do you think is reasonable to do the following

5 horses
Turn out and bring in
Feed morning and night
Daily feet pick out and light groom as required in evening
Muck out 5 stables, all on rubber mats with shavings on 1/3rd poo and wet out daily
Hay for all (2 on nets rest have off floor)
poo pick fields
Chuck back muck trailer (not large emptied every 3 weeks) as required
Sweep yard
Check electric fence

Look forward to your comments

Cheers

Dear All

Thanks for your replies, so feel that my 5 hours per day is about right

Linda - have stables on 3 sides of a square so yard about 25 feet by 30 feet, yep in and out individually, muk trailer next to stables, light grooming mainly mains and tails as in lightweight rugs. Feed easy as on different mixes

Kathleen - come and work for me and you can play with Ella.

Yvonne - Wish I could feed every morning, but as I spend alot of time away from home have decided to fix daily hours rather than change them weekly. The lady does travel to area daily to do her own horse on DIY with neighbour, and approached me looking for work when we moved in. So I guess I am quite lucky that she is in the area all day.

I would think about 4-5 hours, I do 7 muck outs all on a full bed of straw or woodchip some weekends and put 2 or 3 in the field that takes me an 1 hour 45 minutes.
I am assuming you are looking to employ someone to do this, I also agree with Yvonne with the timing issue or your going to have to pay them to return in the evening, whereas they could start at 12 and finish at feed and bring in time.

Probably 4-5 hours but as you want them to feed morning and night they'll probably have to be there all day unless they live in or very close. Would suggest that if you want them to go back and forth then you'd need to factor their travelling time into what you pay them.

Maybe an idea for you to feed an put out in the morning then they could turn up as and when and do whatever is required before bringing them in and feeding at night

I would imagine about 4 hours, but I suppose you could do a trial run, see how long it takes, and adjust accordingly.

It used to take me 3-4 hours to do 13 all out stallions swapped over morning one in afternoon one out all horses lead out everything ready for evening bring and fields poo picked and checked

We have 6, and I would expect that it would take a single competent person 4-5 hours a day to complete that lot (depends on the size and state of the fields you expect them to poo pick etc., do they each have to be led out and brought back in individually? what you classify as light grooming, how dirty the horses are, how big is the yard you expect to be swept, how far away is the muck heap, how many metres of electric fencing to be checked, how complicated are their feeds etc.etc)

I suppose the easy answer would be how long does it take you to do all these things?
