If you look at the film again it somehow looks even worse each time .
Positive moves by Johanna Ullstrom and others backing up Erik are encouraging that this practise can be eliminated

Why cant the AHS take insurance out on someone from outside the Arab World???? Surely its the same price to insure someone to DC at a show wether they are a member or not! If it isnt then make them a member. Simple. Wont cost the AHS nothing.

Don't forget that even if you ARE a DC you still have to get picked to work at shows - it isn't automatic. You may well have to ring round and offer yourself about, especially if you HAVEN'T been prominent in the AHS. There have been years when I have not had a show to work. If I were paranoid I might say that was because I *don't* turn a blind eye , but I think it is much more likely to be due to the fact that there are quite a few DCs - and since travel expenses are an issue for many organisers, they tend to pick DCs who live locally.

Well if the only reason that one has to be a member is the insurance then I would be very happy to insure myself and avoid the need to become a member.

I think it important that fair play and/or justice is seen to be done as well as being done. Independent DC's would be a very good idea and I think that Kazzy is correct in her opinion that DC's would be better coming from another sector of the showing world.

Kazzy Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 3:20:00 PM
I would have thought what Delyth has put should really be upheld. How can DC's who have a vested interested in showing be able to be a DC? Could be wrong like but isnt their a conflict of interest going on there. What if a DC see's something and they are friends/acqauntancies/or whatever with the person who needs reprimanded, are they going to uphold the rules?

Just asking like not pointing any fingers or anything.

Shows do use the same DC's as we normally try to work with people we believe can be objective and of course we are required to have at least one ECAHO DC and the choice is limited.

For me the DC, Steward and Judes should work as a team with the exhibitors/handlers. I do not believe the role is one of policing to punich more to prevent and educate

If the AHS are amenable and our DC's can take the time we would be happy for anyone interested to shadow our DCs on show day to see what is involved.

Delyth, must admit I had not heard that ruling

The reasons all judges, DCs etc are required to be members is the insurance cover that is required. It is absolutely right that the AHS takes cover out to protect the individual in case of accident or personal injury.

One thing is for sure, we need some new DCīs thatīs willing to step up to the task! But one thing is to get on the DC list, another thing is to actually getting picked to the shows, where this abuse happens. They normally use the same dcīs, the same judges, the same everything

I was in Menton a few years back, and witnessed a dc coming over to check on a horse. He touched near the horseīs eyes, and his hand was completelz black from mascara or whatever had been used, did he care? Not at all, he pretended he didnt see it. This was a horse owned by a famous Middle Eastern studfarm. I bet, if that had been a small breeder, that same horse would have been disqualified on the spot.
Kazzy Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 1:57:19 PM
I dont go on the AHS website either it has nothing for me on there being a one horse owner that doesnt show.

Next time there is a DC course I will have a go. I have done enough mouthing off about this and need to stand up and be counted really.

I cant recall reading about it either in the AHS so next time I will make a mental note to read it cover to cover

Tbh I think really people from outside the arab world should DC the shows then there is no matter of difference or opinion or if you know the people involved in abusing the horses, at least the outsider is just that, an outsider.

I would LOVE to go on a DC or PJI course but there is NEVER anything going on down in my neck of the woods (Cornwall)I'm not expecting anything on my doorstep but even Bristol would be good, and surely would pull in people from a number of areas ? I would be willing to travel further, but these events always seem to take place at this time of year (understandably, avoiding the breeding / showing season) but for people like me who look after their horses (17) single handedly, it is very difficult to go anywhere far in the Winter.

I do remember reading about this in the AHS News, but have to agree that the 'new' AHS website is still very disappointing - there could be SO much information on there !
Delyth Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 1:10:29 PM
Desperate for members Sue however they reel them in !! I have many friends now who don't breed, don't want to show at Malvern and the AHS offer nothing for them so they save their cash.
Suelin Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 12:22:18 PM
Interesting that you need to be a member. I feel that it would be far better not to be actually. Less chance of conflict of interests I would have thought.

I am not a member of the AHS, it gives me no value for my money. We have 2 Arab geldings so no breeding there and haven't shown anything for some time. Why would I want to effectively waste my money for an organisation that gives me nothing? That said I am hugely interested in the future of our breed and the welfare of the horses both at home and in the show ring.

What is the way forward I wonder? I am very interested in the course.

I always thought if you were actively involved in showing then you couldn't be a DC. That was definately the case a few years ago as myself and Darron Carter were interested.
azeer Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 09:36:56 AM
Hi - All I have spoken to Annette Dixon, the organisor of the DC event and there are four places left which can be open to non members but if you decide that going forward you wish to undertake the DC training you would need to be a member. If you are interested please contact Annette direct today. Plese pm me if you want her number.
moatside Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 09:20:37 AM
Suelin - No. You have to be a member to attend which has (possibly) stopped a good few from doing it as there are a fair few who for whatever reason have not renewed membership!!
Suelin Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 09:01:06 AM
Can you apply if you are not a member of the AHS?
azeer Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 09:00:18 AM
Templars I have pm'd you
templars Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 08:40:59 AM
I saw the advert as well and asked to be sent details. Didn't get any and as I said, I don't go on the AHS website.

Hi
I saw the advert in the AHS News several months ago and found the information I needed quite easily.

templars Posted - 04 Nov 2011 : 08:25:50 AM
Hmm - I've expressed interest several times to the AHS or Committee members about training to be a DC. I don't visit the AHS website very often because to be honest, there isn't much on there that I find of interest and I don't find it the most intuitive site to navigate.

However, having seen this DC course mentioned on Facebook, and the response that there are places still available, I've just been to the AHS website.

Now, when I want to enter an affiliated eventing, show jumping or dressage competition, the details are right there on the front page.

With this - is it mentioned on the front page? No. But the AGM is.

So, where to go? Try event and shows - is it there as a highlight? No. It's a small advert on the right hand side, second screen down.

Click, because now I'll have my joining instructions. No. It just says all day course, Banbury and a link to a map of Banbury. How do I apply, whom do I contact, what time does it start, what's the cost, what's the location? Nothing.

At the moment, I'm working over 14 hours a day to meet a mandated government timeline on a multimillion pound programme of work. I don't have the time to phone to track down details by phoning Windsor House (hell, some days I don't even have time to go to the loo). Why isn't the information readily accessible, advertised and available to all?

In my over tired state (and I admit, it's my personal take on this), it feels like you could only find the info if you've been given the nod where to look.

I have taken the time to read the role and powers of a DC and I am attending the AHS DC course on Sunday. I must say that I am surprised that very few others seem to have taken the time or made the effort to do the same.
azeer Posted - 03 Nov 2011 : 11:09:42 PM
Well a DC course has been arranged and advertised since the summer but there appears to be few takers. There are a lot of vocal people and if you want things to change then maybe you need to be prepared to help that change. Why not go to the DC training course - details are on the AHS website - and see if you can help - there are some of you on here who would definitely be very capable. Become a DC, make sure the rules are enforced and help drive change.
