Ok I have an ideal wh saddle that was made for my boy. He is now 9 and has changed shape so I got the saddler out he altered it and then 2 weeks later it seemed wrong again so I called him again and he said there is nothing more he can do with that saddle as he has changed so much. He says the saddle is worth £600 but that he can only give me £400 as he needs to get his Mark up! I get that but it's seems a big Mark up. He will bring a load of saddles for me to try on and I'm not fussed what it is as long as my boy is comfortable and I can ride properly as at the moment I'm being tipped by the saddle so have reverted to hacking bare back.
So do I part ex or sell it privately baring in mind I don't have money for a new saddle till the old one sells and what with the Market being poor will I get it's value anyway?

Opinions and advice greatly appreciated

I thought saddles diresct sounded a bit too good to be true, have you tried it on here Qui Gon Jinn?

As I understand it from our local saddle fitter, when selling you will be lucky to get around 50% of the new retail price for a second hand saddle and it all depends on age and condition.

I think I'd be inclined to take the £400 from him. I sent pictures and full details of a 3 year old Fieldhouse Pro Event saddle I wanted to sell to Saddles Direct recently. They offered me £500 for it......wonderful I thought, until I realised that they were going to take 35% off that price for their commission! That brought my money down to £325!! I was annoyed as the saddle is prestine and I know they have to make a living, but to take £175 off me, when I also had the expense of sending the saddle to them, making it a bigger loss, was really too much to take! Needless to say I still have the saddle sitting there gathering dust!

You could try advertising it your self first if you dont want to lose that sort of money on it and if that fails go back to the sadder.

Good luck with whatever you decide

You would struggle to get anywhere near £600 for it privately, £400 is a pretty good px price - remember he has to make a living and will probably have to re-flock the saddle when he re-sells it, and could have it in stock for months before it sells.

I agree with the part exchange idea, also, if you look on eBay saddles are going for such low prices these days people are practically giving them away. Although the thought of losing £200 to a mark up is bad it could be more if you chose to sell on eBay or similar. Maybe other sites like Preloved are better for saddle sales currently?

£400 seems a fair price for him to take it, I know it is nothing like what you paid. You might get less on the open market and you still need to buy aniother saddle. If you trust the saddler I would go with the part exchange.
