wash and reproof every turnout rug you have each year ready for the winter?

I just wondered what other people do. Sometimes I think the more you wash them the less waterproof they seem to become even with reproofing.

I have on some occasions laid the rugs on the floor and washed the inside of the rug (don't know how they get so filthy on the inside) and then hosed them off and hung them up to dry and left the outside alone.

Just wondered what works best for you?

Lol Lindilou, there's a method in my madness, if I save on rugs this year then maybe I can justify buying that lovely halter for Nabil ready for next year.....had my eye on a certain one since we first got him and I think I can get him a full size now

No; I only have turnout rugs and Roger's trusty old Fal Pros (light/medium/heavy) get repaired as necessary, mud brushed off (only if really grubby) and individually rolled up in feed bags until next autumn; some must be 13/14 years old. I had hoped that Chips could wear hand-me-down rugs but no - he'll need 6'0" and Roger's are all 5'9" - shame! Ingatestone Saddlery has a rug sale tomorrow so that's my morning arranged.

I wonder if the guarantee is still valid once they have been washed and reproofed by a third party?

We used to have a commercial washer and did our own, but none of the wash-in reproofers were particularly effective, the best reproofer we found was Fabsil gold which you spray onto a dry rug. Also once they have a repair patch on they will rarely be waterproof if stitched.

"Put them in the washing machine" - I wish my machine was THAT big.....it can just mangage the liners! Even then I watch out that OH isn't around)
Mine heavyweight tunouts and night rugs go to cleaners and get washed (only ever needed one reproofed) Light and medium weights get washed with hose in the yard and hung over a fence to dry.
moatside Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 11:58:50 AM
I pressure wash t/outs as and when needed and then reseal with brick sealant - works for mine
Sam Hunt Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 11:47:55 AM
Mine live out all year, so I don't use stable rugs.

As for turnout rugs however - I only wish my gang could go for a whole season without trashing their rugs completely. It's cheaper to replace their trashed rugs(by bargain hunting of course) than it would be to wash and repair them.

Which reminds me - am off to Newbury Show tomorrow to see what rugs they've got on special show offer. Will be needing at least 2 turnouts, if not more!

I have a very accommodating local laundrette who is happy to wash all of my rugs at a very reasonable price, I then use clear brick re-proofer to waterproof them. Summer sheets and anything that fits in the washer will get done at home. I also have a horse vacuum so I can hoover the rugs if they get very hairy or dusty...
marionpack Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 10:46:34 AM
Have never had any of my turn out rugs re-proofed, Have got a rambo that is 10 years old and still waterproof, stable rugs different matter, they go straigth in the washing machine (when OH out)
sab2 Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 10:38:18 AM
I have a thing about rugs, most ladies collect shoes , handbags gold etc i love rugs, i just cannot stop myself buying them especially in the sales . I only wash and reproof if they are very grubby, otherwise i brush them off and maybe sponge the inside a little, stable rugs all go in the washer as it takes a 10kg load, i also never let my OH go in the tackroom as he will find out i am a serial rug hoarder.
Pasha Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 10:05:40 AM
We're very lucky as Pasha and Shesky are very clean boys and their tunrouts rarely need washing, but when they do they go to be professionally done and so far so good

Indoor rugs on the other hand! Yuck! Christ knows what Sheksy does to them but they get Filthy and soo hairy... I even have to take his summer sheets to be professionally done as even though they can fit in the washing machine, there is more hair in them than on Shesky!!!

Right Lyndylou, that's me and Gearge going through your rubish bins for sure lol. I need a new one for my 3 yr old as he out grew the 5' 6" as the spring arrived just in time.

Poor Crimbo, the very thought of wearing a mare rug and trying to serve himself. I have a vivid imagination.
LYNDILOU Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 09:42:16 AM
Oh dear George you wouldnt like being here then ! I threw all my rugs awaythis year because they were not weather proof and very tatty, and started again with all new ones, if they last 5 years I recon I am lucky. the good thing about Arabs is they are all about 5/9/ 6ft and they often get switched around without too much bother.( although I dont put a mares rug on Crimbo he would wet himself with excitement LOL!)
george Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 09:31:07 AM
OH dear! I have soo many rugs, I just hate to throw any away (hoarder alert) if any are to bad they get stripped of leg straps and surcingles for repairs and some good ones get used for patches when I do my own repairs feeling the pinch a bit this year so have been mending quite a bit as I can't justify wasting money if they can be repaired..I have nikwax reproofer here but haven't needed to use it..yet! Stable rugs if under 6ft I put them in my machine (any bigger they don't get clean) Tip I thought up my self, put your rugs in an old double duvet cover, one with buttons on the bottom is best as you can do them up through d rings to keep it straight, keeps the hairs out of the machine and stops the metal buckles damaging it I have been quite lucky as my one horse owner sister likes to get a new rug for her mare every year and wouldn't dream of mending them herself, so I come to the rescue and take them off her hands, lol
Dot Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 09:26:28 AM
At the end of winter I pressure wash all my used rugs inside and out then pop them through the horses washing machine with no detergent. I use some ball cleaner things from the science museum as my machine is not connected to a septic tank but the settling tank in the field. Seems to do the trick. I have only ever reproofed one rug with nick wax that had stopped being waterproof, I got 2 extra years out of it.

I don't change my turnouts but do check that horses are warm and dry under them every day. Would not think of doing anything else having had waterproof rugs /jackets let me down in the past.
Kazzy Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 08:13:20 AM
I do send mine away for washing and reproofing and so far so good!!

He winters out now so they need to be cleaned, even though he isnt a dirty pony like some ie his mother!!!

He has Horseware and they gaurantee them for 10 years so cant be bad!!

I have loads of rugs and couldn't justify the cost to have them washed. My outdoor Weatherbeetas have never gone to the cleaners because in the past I have had others cleaned and they are not quite the same or have leaked after. If they get mud trashed, a good hosing and hang to dry. I do send stable rugs as they get stained and smelly if I can't stuff them in the washing machine.
gem@oakmeister Posted - 16 Sep 2011 : 07:20:18 AM
Like others I have spent lots of money sending rugs away for cleaning and reproofing. Never been impressed with results, sometimes come back leaking and even shrunk linings pulling rug out of shape.
Now I get a big tubtrug and soak rug in warm water and baby shampoo ( tesco do it at 9p a bottle) for a couple of hours treading it like grapes a few times. Tip it out onto the yard and let it drain a few mins so not so heavy. Then chuck it over gate and get power washer on it.( Previous to getting power washer used hose jet spray attachment which was ok)

I do them a couple at a time over summer on really good days and they soon dry. I have scrubbed heavy soiled areas before but find it damages the proofing so now I accept the occasional feint stain remaining but generally they come up spotless. You need to turn rug over and hose inside and out till water runs clear.
Baby shampoo shifts dirt without damaging waterproofing. It's a messy job but so satisfying to see my rugs nice and clean and fresh still fitting and still waterproof.

I haven't been very impressed with the rain resistance of my professionally cleaned and reproofed rugs either. Lily and Buzz now have a rug each with removable liners and necks (1 x Rambo Duo and 1 x Premier Equine Trio). which means I can wash the liners really easily in the washing machine and leave the outers alone. Because the liners are shiny nylon they don't carry much hair into the washing machine either - bonus!

I've been buying bargain lightweight turnouts from Derby House while they've been on offer - at between £20 and £25 each they are cheaper than getting the old ones laundered and reproofed.

I've even had the sewing machine out to do my own repairs....
Vera Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 9:57:45 PM
After having ruined several decent rugs by having them washed and reproofed (professionally) using Nikwax I don't bother getting any of my turnouts cleaned.

I have a 16 year old Rambo Wug which is still waterproof, even in the heaviest rain. It has never been washed.

I always change rugs at night into stable rugs so I know for sure if my rugs are waterproof or not. I wonder how many people who leave turnouts on their horses all the time bother to take them off when they are sopping wet to see if they are in fact waterproof!!

TC Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 9:07:31 PM
I've just had all my ones fixed, washed and reproofed. Fara doesn't seem to destroy her rugs with the same enthusiasm as my old mare used to. I used to go through at least 2rugs every winter, they would end up completely shredded. now it's just the odd rip here and there. I find Amigo rugs fit her best and aren't too expensive.
Kes Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 8:45:39 PM
As I have over 30 rugs for one horse (don't ask) I only use a selection of them every year. But at the end of every year I do religiously send the used ones away for a mend, wash and re-proof and they come back almost new. For any rug that can't be economically maintained it gets binned.
I do have Nikwax rugwash and re-proof here so any that need a quick wash I do put through my own washing machine, then moan about horse hair on my clothes for a week
basbob Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 8:23:53 PM
Put them in the washing machine and the instructions tell me to put them under a hairdryer to waterproof them...
Suelin Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 8:23:30 PM
I have mine washed and reproofed each year. I've never had one that's leaked yet.
Quarabian Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 8:20:33 PM
I just brush the inside, wash the outside with water, no detergent. So far so good. The price I pay for rugs it would be cheaper to buy a new one than get them professionally washed and reproofed. but then I am a scrooge.
Vik1 Posted - 15 Sep 2011 : 8:15:20 PM
Mine get sent away washed and reproofed every year ready for winter. S far Ive only 1 rug that I think needs to be binned as its not as water proof anymore...Velvs Fal no fill rainsheet. All her other Fals (all about 50 million of them!) are still great! Ive had them about 10-14 years and apart from straps having to be sewn back on etc they are still warm, cosy and waterproof...love them!!
Once Storms fully grown Ill be investing in some for him too but at moment hes borrowing Velvs.
