Posted - 12 Sep 2011 : 2:07:35 PM I know frozen semen has been discussed a few times before but what is considered to be fair "terms & conditions" for frozen semen, for semen that has been tested to be of good condition, i.e. live foal guaranty or so many doses and no guaranty?
For example how many straws should you expect in a dose & how many doses for the stud fee, should the stallion owner offer to send more straws at cost plus transport, if the mare was to get in-foal & if there were straws left over offer a reduced fee if another viable pregnancy is obtained?
It seems like a minefield with possibly allot of expense incurred on each sides!

Posted - 12 Sep 2011 : 4:43:12 PM The amount of straws will depend on the concentration and viability of the sperm. A horse with lower counts will have more straws per dose. Also as with natural/chilled coverings the terms for rebreeding, live foal guarantee etc varies from stud to stud, and from semen holding station to another.

Posted - 12 Sep 2011 : 3:54:00 PM I had my mare inseminated using frozen semen this year. This was all new to me as well as have always had her covered naturally and she has always taken on the first covering. With the frozen semen it took 3 attempts but she is in foal. I paid for 2 doses which consisted of 4 straws, all of which were used. As she didn't take on 2 cycles I had to pay the trasporation of more straws. I think most stallion owners give you enough for at least 2 cycles. Whats left over...so I'm told goes back to whoever is holding it.
