Following my many 'How do you COPE with adult life AND horses?' posts whereby you all said 'If you want something badly enough then you do it', I think I'm going to take the plunge and start tentatively looking for a love of my own. It probably won't be for a few months yet as I know that my contract at work expires at the end of December and I wouldn't mind the financial security of having an permanent position before acquiring a demanding beastie, though I'm keeping an eye open for the perfect horse and if (s)he happens to appear before that, well, I shall have to call it fate.

I'm going to be looking for a fairly young horse, already backed, that I can relive my youth with in plaiting manes and tails and sticking stickers on hooves and who will do a little bit of everything with me without trying to kill me every time I wander in to the stable. (My old warmblood was very beautiful but a miserable sod!) I'd love to get into showing fairly seriously so will be looking for something with beautiful confirmation, but that will come later, after the dressing it up as a kelpie and galloping about the beach. I'm torn between utter excitement and sheer terror at the committment of another horse when it's not even been two years since Silas died.

Who else is considering acquiring another? Reassure me that this can be done and I'm not wholly mad!

I think I'm sound financially - I'm a fairly neurotic saver generally and could afford, even with a horse, at least six months of unemployment. My biggest 'expense', so to speak, is time; My career field often means starting early and working late, and the boyfriend is quite demanding too, but I'm planning to ask around and find myself a nice competant teenager who would like to ride on the weekends, at no cost to them, just to share the joy a bit and to maybe be able to spend Sundays enjoying London with my chap. :)

As I mentioned, I have owned and financed a horse before so I'm well and truly aware of how they eat up finances, but I should be fine with that aspect, at least. :) I'm in no particular rush to buy, mind, and I fully anticipate that finding myself a little saint may well take me into the new year!

yes please write down what it is going to cost you, stabling , feeding/ wormers farrier and vets fees. the fact that we are about to enter the winter months when things will get tough.. if your job is not secure then it puts a strain on your own future not just your horses. so my advice is dont go there until you are in a secure position to take on such an expense. otherwise you may be forced to try and find a home for him/her which in winter will be almost impossible , dont let your heart rule your head, better to have a shared loan where you can ride and do all those things you spoke of while sharing the expense with someone else ?

I did not manage a year after losing Rio. He left such a void in my life and I never thought life would be the same. Yet here I am just 15 months on and I have found a little star. yes he is different - they all are, but I love him to bits and he has won a place in my heart. No you are not mad...although make sure you are financially as sound as you can be these days as costs have shot up. However reading your post you will already know the pros and cons.....go for it and good luck - if you find one half as good as my chap you will not be disappointed. [:) PS I found my boy on AL.
