.

To The Brooke London/Cairo

Yesterday afternoon, we have received an urgent plea from a Dr. Vivian, who was on her way back home from her hospital. She met a very distressing sight; a horse had been hit by a car, breaking it's leg and was severely injured and in pain. She immediately contacted ESAF who recommended Brooke as they do not have the facility for this type of injury. However, she called back again ten minutes later in dismay saying she had been unable to get through to Brooke. She had only been able to speak to a guard who told her that Brooke closes at 4pm and there was no ambulance or vet until the morning- please could she call back then. ESAF immediately sent a vet who decided the injury was treatable and in co-operation with the owner, put the horse to sleep.

Why does Brooke not have a 24 hour service as it is the sole equine organization in Cairo? Surely there must be some kind of back up service to cover this type of emergency outside of office hours?

Why is Brooke pulling back and only providing surgical procedures that do not exceed 20 minutes? Who else in Cairo is able to fill this void? Brooke is the only organisation who has the facilities and expertise for the more complicated surgical procedures. We have had so many complaints from equine owners by the pyramids that Brooke is still only providing the very basic medical help- superficial disinfecting of wounds.

Why do you have a fleet of ambulances available only between the hours of 9am - 4 pm? How can you justify not leaving even one on emergency 24 hour call?

It is now time for Brooke Cairo to amend their policy and rules, or perhaps the management. ESAF have written to you many times recently and have never had a satisfactory reply. The nature of horse rescue and animal welfare is not limited to office hours.Perhaps if Brooke are unwilling or unable to use their vehicle's between the hours of 4 pm and 10 am, they would allow ESAF to use them instead of them sitting immobile? In this way, your current claims of working in co-operation with ESAF become valid.

We await your prompt and comprehensive reply, Yours sincerely,

ESAF Chairperson Ahmed Sherbiny.

Please do Fee. The problem about large charities is that increasingly the funds go on admin and publicity, leaving a smaller slice of the pie for the real work that everyone thinks they are donating to. I also know of a case involving the PDSA that wasted ridiculous amounts of money.

I have continually posted on the brookes FB page about this situation. I find it discusting, not only because of the tragic state in egypt, but because dorothy brooke first set up the brooke hospital in cairo.

the brookes accounts show that they have several hundred thousand pounds in the bank... why isnt it being used???

also on the "brooke egypt" website, they say they are still working there....

i am appalled by it.

My daughter and some friends research and continuously update charities effectiveness, cost effectiveness and value per £1 per life saved/helped. They will only give to charities which are the most effective.

It wouldn't maybe surprise you that some of the biggest and most well known charities are the worst. If you want I'll find out if the girl who specialises in researching the animal charities knows if there is another more effective charity operating in Egypt for the welfare of horses.

That is awful, thank goodness something was finally done to put this poor horse out of its pain. I was surprised to read that they have no out of hours service, surely they could provide one, lets hope something can be done about this.

the Brooke hospital charity is a huge one, possibly the best known and people assume they are doing a great Job.
I always did until I started questioning them in times of great need , their head office houses many staff to manage the charitable funds but whenever I rang them I was constantly fobbed off without real answers, I stopped my monthly donations to them as they would never give me a straight answer about what they were doing to help the poor starving horses of the pyramids. anyone paying into the Brooke you have a right to know what is happening to your money, dont be afraid to ask. I hope they will reply to that letter and tell us why there is no after hours service to help the animals who need it!

That's shocking. Please let us know their response Lynda.
