When I was looking for pictures to put up on this site in my 'hello' post I noticed that Rafi's mane and forelock were a lot longer and possibly thicker when I got him in May last year than they are now. Partner suggested it might be because he had only just been cut then and maybe colts have longer manes than geldings? I'm worried that I'm breaking his mane with the brush I'm using.
What do you use to groom your horses' manes/tails? And do you neaten them up at all? So far I've left Rafi natural (I put his mane in an arab plait for riding) but the ends are looking a bit straggly.

Thanks folks. I searched for the thread and got some good advice from that too.
So, I've ordered my Cowboy Magic (I see it can be used on human hair too and I'm always searching for a miracle cure for my frizzy mess). As I don't have any yet I went to the yard today armed with a previous purchase for my own hair (sadly failed) - Aussie miracle grow or something, leave in conditioner and detangler. Tried combing through his mane with my fingers but just seemed to be creating knots so gave up and plaited it. Had more luck with his tail, as I washed and lemon juiced that (we're going out tomorrow) and put in plenty of aussie miracle whatever and it looked really shiny and quite untangled when I'd finished.
No more brushing though, I've made up my mind.

Same as Kes-never,ever use comb or brush on mane and tail!People can't believe it when I tell them,I just wash(sometimes only with water)and condition.There was a thread recently on mane knots and tangles. |

Your boy looks gorgeous i try not too brush too much either and if i do only with a body brush but Stars mane is very thick |

Aaaaww, he's a lovely boy , you two look good together.
Kes's mane is quite long also ( a few inches below the bottom of his neck) but I never, ever touch it with anything brush-like unless I really have to. All I do is shampoo and condition it every few weeks and put Cowboy Magic serum on it. On windy and wet days I use Avon skin-so-soft to prevent 'windtangles'. The only time I do anything to tame it into place I use my fingers or if I really have to I finger divide it into segments and use a body brush to separate the hairs very, very carefully.
I am rather anal about his mane I have to say, if he gets a knot  I will stand there for an hour and pick it slowly to not break any hairs. If I do I  !!!
I haven't neatened it up at all yet, but then I have only had him for 5 months and he was immaculate when he came to me, just trying to keep up someone else's good work now! I apply the same theory to his tail as well which is like very fine spun gold, I don't dare touch it with a brush!!!
