I know this subject has been covered many times before but I am looking to install a second stable with rubber matting. I have had mats in the other stable (the old 6 x 4 v heavy rubber) for about 5 years and they have been great, never moved etc.

Shopping about the way to go now seems to be the eva lightweight more spongy type mats, which am sure are more comfy for the horse but I have a few reservations, can anyone help who has used these mats??

1. As they are lightweight, will they move when installed?
2. Are the small (1ft square) interlocking type better than the larger 6 x 4 non interlocking to prevent movement.

Am not too worried out the price (within reason!) as they will be down for years but am more concerned with any movement and how they will stand up to long term using of my box walking, ground pawing 16hh monster!!

Thanks, Sarah

My interlocking 6'x 3' EVA mats are aproaching their 20th birthday & still in great shape. I'm so glad I chose lightweight ones as they've moved stables at least 20 times!

We've had the lighter more rigid EVA (cow cubicle) mats for 15yrs+ and they are fab.
Trypically 2 of the 6x4ft in a box with a small bed at the back. They occassionally move along a bit when a horse gets up but not far. You can bed up to them to keep them in place.
Provided you don't let them curl when washing and drying, they shoudln't lose shape.
Very little wear and tear on them (even with my metal fork!) and shod horses haven't casued any trouble.
We have the floppy/heavy rubber ones too and much prefer the EVA. The foals and weanlings prefer the mats to ehri bed any day

I wondered the same thing!

A stable at yard has the lightweight ones and i see the corners curling up on some mats and also the cats like to use the mats to claw! If the cats like clawing on them i did wonder how they would stand up to a shod horse, especially if it had road nails.

Ive got the old heavy ones and like you they dont move but are a nightmare to lift!

I've got both, and if you have a box walking ground pawing 16 hh monster I would go for the heavier old fashioned ones. I like the EVA ones, and they are so much easier to lift and move around for cleaning, but the ones we have do move around a bit. The small interlocking ones could well be better, have got the big 6 x 4 non interlocking type. Lovely and spongey underfoot though.
