After a very nice quite 6mile hack on sunday both me and my friend had to dismount onto a soft surface on which we both had to fall to squat whilst our knees stopping ringing with pain..oh we laughed at each other..But what can we do??? stirrup length foot wear changes?

A hole more in the leathers will make all the difference between painful joints and a comfortable ride for me...

On the way home quit your stirrups for a bit, then take them back, quit them and roll ankles or lift heels up under your hip for a few secs etc.... and keep riding
(bet you looked really funny!!)

If you can ride safely without stirrups for a few minutes and you can relax your legs, before lengthening them it won't feel so strange.

I get the same pain but mostly in Winter if I dismount onto a hard surface after a lengthy ride or an intense schooling session. It sounds logical to try altering your stirrup length, also, since I have been riding in a dressage saddle for the last 5 months (so longer leg length) I haven't really noticed the knee pain at all, compared to having spent the last 15 years in the same BC Event saddle.

Try bareback. No I am not really serious but you dont get knee ache after riding.

I ride long and never get this problem even though I am getting old now and have a knee injury to cope with.

I would adjust your stirrup length first, I wear Ariat boots with gel insoles which helps. Flexible stirrups help too. My knees and ankles are ok after 25 miles, and I have dodgy joints. Obviously you build up strength the more you do it. Also might be worth reviewing the actual position of your legs/feet.

I ride quite long, think that's easier on the joints.

I get the same thing. My ankles also hurt when I ride. Lengthening your leathers may help, but i think I am going to buy myself support bandages
