Hi folks,
My filly is lame after trimming on her off fore and I am concerned it will perhaps turn into an abscess?
She had to wait longer than usual for a trim resulting in her feet starting to crack. I think he gave her a more severe trim than usual. She is on box rest on a soft bed of straw. Someone said bruising can take weeks of box rest before all is well again. The farrier is coming on monday to look at her.
I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE OR SIMILAR EXPERIENCES?

i think it also depends on horses makeup, one of mine has very soft feet and is always footy after trim, she lives out and she recovers very quickly,as has been said if farrier makes you wait, get rid, there are plenty out there to choose from. |

I would agree with the no trimming of no soles and frog if they are barefoot, but if they are shod it is a must that they trim both, I have had a nightmare with a farrier not cutting back both and resulting in a lame horse, the shoe will sit on the sole if it is not cut back which will cause bad bruising, I have used soda crystals on a bruised sole before just add some to a shallow bucket and soak the foot for a few minutes I was told it helps, hope your horse is more comfortale soon. |

Hi all,
I just wanted to ask re the sole and frog trim bit... I always get conflicting into on whether you should or shouldnt do it.
Could someone please explain why or why not for me?

Thanks everyone, farrier coming tomorrow and hopefully she will be fine in another few days, bless her.
Sorry for being so "green" but I have very little experience of foot problems and lameness which is perhaps largely due to the fact that nearly all the horses I have had have been hardy (and ever underestimated) pure bred Arabs!!! |

Our farrier makes the apprentice leave her knife in her pocket when doing barefoot - nothing off frogs or sole. |

I get this after the farrier has been if he takes anything off the soles. Farriers do this without thinking I'm sure and so I remind him every time now, nothing off the soles please. I've also started asking him to leave the frogs too, nature keeps everything trim.
If he even takes a slither of Po's soles they bruise and then I worry about an abscess. Balance and walls only Mr Farrier

Def sounds like foot soreness and not an abscess so put her out on non stony ground you should as above have said find she is better in a few days..........I agree your farrier shouldnt have over trimmed, and should be there more regularly!!! |

Thanks folks. I have never had this with a horse before...
I did wonder about leaving her out to keep her moving about...
No heat and no swelling she is only a little sounder on soft bedding. She was very tender on her feet going accross the yard to the field just after she was trimmed. Next morning she was lame, though not acutely.
The farrier had been away on holiday and I wish now I had just used someone else instead of waiting for him to come back by which time her feet were long and cracked. I won't make that mistake again! |

Agreed - hoof growth increases with wear/movement (supply/demand), so she'll be better off out. It shouldn't take long before she'll much less sore.
If your farrier makes you wait too long between appointments for a trim, then I'd seriously consider changing farrier!

If it is from a hard trim it is not bruising as such, it is tenderness which should ease fairly quickly and should not lead to an abcess. I would be inclined to put her out so she is moving, rather than box rest, as the hoof will respond better to movement. |

If it is the result of over trimming she should recover within a few days to a week. It isnt any more likely to abscess than any other time. Does the foot look very short? Is the sole touching the floor? Is she sounder on soft bedding than walking on the hard?? Any heat or swelling? |
