Posted - 10 Aug 2011 : 2:34:54 PM Hi all, just a bit of fun really but what are your favourite Araby books, whether they be fiction, pedigree research, historic studs etc. I don't have a big library but one I always refer to is "Arabian Exodus" by Margaret Greely.

Posted - 13 Aug 2011 : 09:58:35 AM Jinny and Shantih, loved them and have re-read some of them that my mam dug out for me. There is one, I think it is called born to be wild and the pic on the front looks just like my mare. Those books were also the reason I wanted my own chesnut arab mare.
Arabmare amazing story! |

Posted - 12 Aug 2011 : 10:32:58 AM They contacted me via a pony book forum. We were discussing in a thread about the new jinny books. I said how mad I was on them and posted pictures up of shantih. Well they found that and contacted me. They are using my photography too so I'm even more happy!!! When patricia sent me a letter saying my shantih was her dream Arab and her true "shantih" it made me cry. I had always dreamed of speaking to her and telling her what those books done to me! They are on amazon and everywhere really now!
I too love the black stallion and king of the wind. We had the hardback at the school libary and I always had that book! Love to find it again! I had an imaginary horse called shantih and sham when I was a kid and my best friend hadctge black stallion but she called him barq from saddle club books. We did get the black stallion too. Just wish we still had him but she's got a black mare now do all our dreams have come true!!!!! :-) |

Posted - 12 Aug 2011 : 08:33:26 AM The third Black Stallion film is a prequel I believe and it doesn't star Kelly Reno. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two. They're all on Amazon. I loved 'king of the wind' too although I've never seen the film but had the poster on my wall as a child.
I wrote to Patricia Leitch, author of the Jinny and Shantih books, about 20 years ago and she sent me a lovely handwritten letter back.
If there are any budding authors on AL, I think we need some new Arab horse literature! |

Posted - 12 Aug 2011 : 08:21:01 AM I had forgotten all about the King of the Wind - I read my cousin's copy when I was about 8 - they lived in Horsham where it was easy to catch Arabitis, I must find a copy for myself - thank you so much for reminding me Kim. |

Posted - 11 Aug 2011 : 9:41:49 PM My 1st ever favourite "Araby book" was King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry. I sooo LOVED the story of the Godolphin Arabian, which I first read at about 10 years old! It was only a couple of years ago I decided to track down another replacement copy on the internet, as my childhood copy had been lost with growing-up & moving on.....I was so thrilled when I found a limited edition hardback copy! |

Posted - 11 Aug 2011 : 1:57:15 PM Jinny shantih books for me too!! I was so obsessed with them they were my life! I set out to own my own shantih. I have her and called her shantih. Then they rebublished the books starting from last year and found me and my shantih is the new "shantih" on the cover!!! Weird or what! Sometimes I can't quite believe it!!!!! |

Posted - 11 Aug 2011 : 1:22:54 PM Callisto it's a shame that you can no longer find out the owners / breeders of Arabians in the UK, I often wonder why the AHS don't offer an online system like they have in Australia, where you type in a horses name & you can see who bred / owns the horse, although the breeder / owner can stipulate that their details not be shown if they wish! Also you can see the horses progeny, pedigree etc, its very useful!
Another book I like looking at is "The Arab Horse" by Peter Upton. |

Posted - 10 Aug 2011 : 6:15:39 PM Definitely Arabian Exodus - my copy was signed by Margaret Greely in 1990, when we went to visit. She was a very old lady then and she'd forgotten some of the wonderful horses she'd bred; I'd love to have met her in her prime.
