Posted - 17 Jul 2011 : 09:41:06 AM Please can anyone give me an idea of the amount of hay I could expect to get in a poor year from about 2.5-3 acres, I live in the south east and we don't get a lot of rain. We don't need the grazing through the summer and didn't know if it was worth the time and effort on a smallish area. |

Posted - 17 Jul 2011 : 1:27:03 PM I have just got slightly over 350 bales off 6 acres this year. We are in Hertfordshire and it is very dry here. If we'd had more rain earlier on in April then we would have had a lot more off it but I'm still really happy with that amount.

Posted - 17 Jul 2011 : 10:10:03 AM Definitely worth the effort particularly this year where everyone appears to be about 35% down on yield. At least they are hereabouts. Hay is seemingly very expensive this year and I think it will be worse come the winter. |

Posted - 17 Jul 2011 : 09:49:06 AM My neighbour uses about 3 acres for her hay and on a decent year gets aprox 100 bales per acre so I suppose if it is a poor year you'd be looking at around half that? This could be wrong as is only an estimate.
