Does anyone have any supplement suggestions for girthy and gassy tummies?

Already on Yea Sacc and have tried Thunderbrook Gut Restore and Liquid Boost, Ulser Guard (Equine America) and Happy Tummy (Activated Charcoal).

I have been suggested to try Colligone, but looks just like more Yeast and Probiotics to me?

Thanks x

Sarah, if you find out what the problem is can you let me know. I have the female equivalant of your gelding! Holds her weight, no wind sucking, not stressy. Hates grooming, girthing and rugging. I have tried gastric supplements to no avail. I really don't think she has ulcers.

My one mare cant stand long wet grass, always gives here gas and looks like the start of colic.

LOL Linda! Luckily (or not) for me, Shesky doesn't have a problem releasing the wind!

Thanks Pasha - I'll have a look at that one - I do feel a bit daft rubbing his belly while he lays there like a great big grumpy Sultan, and of course it must be very uncomfortable for him.

Linda, you could try Happy Tummy - I can't use it as it will absorb his meds as well as all the bad stuff, but some people swear by it

Not that it's very helpful to you, but Harley gets this from grass every so often - makes him lay down and start groaning (he is a bit of a wuss - very scarey the first time he did it - immediately assumed colic), we rub his tummy until he farts (excuse the expression), which is always copious and smelly, and then he is fine. Never occurred to me to feed him something to help with it - if you find something that works I would be interested.

ah sorry just wondered as you had tried ulcer guard and was going to say you can get a free trial of the drug you use to treat ulcers from an American website

No he hasn't been scoped as the vet doesn't think he has ulcers and I don't really want to put him thoruhg it to be honest (I thought I would try the treatment to see if there was an improvement as a diagnostic tool, hence the Ulcer Guard which he has been on 2 weeks now) - he holds weight very well, isn't stressy, doesn't wind suck, crib or anything like that - is just girthly and nippy when groomed! he will also nip when putting on his rugs!

He has been on the Base Mix since Jan and when I changed over I used the Gut Restore and Liquid Boost for a couple of months, but no change in behaviour unfortunately

I knew he didn't like to be groomed and was girthly when I got him 2 years ago and i've been trying to sort it out ever since, but what with everything else he has had going on, I kind of have just been getting on with it!

I definitely think he is uncomfortable in his Tummy - he is worse on grass (more gassy) and he stands with his hind legs a little tucked under! Poor boy!

Sorry if im behind Pasha, has he been scoped? Did you have him on the thunderbrook base mix or just the gut restore?
Pasha Posted - 15 Jul 2011 : 12:18:49 PM
Oh thanks T!!! Will have a look at those - did you think any worked better than the others? Even on no grass and soaked hay, he is still gassy and girthy!

Haven't tried any of these but did loads of research last year: Settlex (Feedmark), GatriX (Hilton Herbs), and Acid-X (Global Herbs) don't have yea-sacc or probiotics as you're already feeding that but lots of other good herbs and minerals. There's also Protexin Acid Ease which does have pro and pre biotics but a few other things that the others don't.

Like you I tried Ulcer Guard (EA) and Happy Tummy with no visible results.
