Week of sheer misery for us. Our beloved Arabian stallion, Nivalis, had to be euthanized on Tuesday because his chronic laminitis condition had deteriorated. Our vet gave him a lethal injection - it was very quick and I know he didn't suffer. Brian and I were the last he saw before he went down. He was buried on Wednesday everning in a quiet corner of the stallion paddock. I shall plant snowdrops on his grave, because he was named for the snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis. Goodbye, brave, noble spirit. Assalamu alaikum, Nivalis. Peace be upon you.

So sorry to hear of your double loss. Love snowdrops and will think of your lovely white boy when I see them again Feb. When Thea was PTS her chum was in the field with her and all the animals came to see even the YO cat, it was the first time it happened like that and whilst it isn't always practical think I would do it again if circumstances allowed.

So sorry to hear of your horse, and cat's death. Nuno Oliveira is right I'm sure. The owner has such a deep knowledge and appreciation of the horse's every move and expression. What a very difficult time for you... RIP

Thanks, Jackie - I often wonder whether Zareeba and Zarello would remember each other after all this time, but knowing horses' memories, I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

I now wish we had been able to let Tiff see Nivalis, because she was hanging round the back of the stable today, where she used to greet him over the stable door when they weren't out together. She whinnied out a couple of times and I went over and gave her a hug; eventually she went to join the other horses, but I really felt for her. I know she'll come to terms with it eventually, but I just wish I could explain things to her so she would understand what's happened. But then, if we could explain things to horses in that way, we wouldn't have the kind of problems we do with them!

BTW for people who don't know them, Tiff is on the left and Nivalis on the right in the mare and stallion pic of my signature pics (the one on the far left)

Lesley, what a tragic loss for you and Brian, but hold on to the fact that he was a lucky, lucky boy, to have a home where he was loved and cared for all his life, and that you did the right thing by him at the end, even though it must have broken your heart... No horse could ask for more. He was, undoubtedly Cherished. I am really sorry to hear of your cat, life can be so unfair. Give Zareeba a big hug from his big sister!!
Zareeba Posted - 17 Jun 2011 : 9:15:32 PM
Thanks so much to all of you who have posted on here. Your kind words mean so much to us. I've dedicated my new book to Nivalis with a quote from a very great horseman, Nuno Oliveira, who wrote:

'...once the horse is dead nothing, not even films, can reproduce the sensation felt when the horse is seen in movement...After the horse is no more, only those who have admired him keep a remembrance of his quality in their hearts, which is gradually effaced by time, and others who have not seen him know him only by romanticised tales, recounted, and sometimes embroidered, by those who have truly loved him.'

Thinking of you xx
lisa rachel Posted - 17 Jun 2011 : 8:08:57 PM
oh Lesley it is agony losing a horse as beloved as he obviously was, my heart goes out to you.
He looks to have been a beautiful horse.

(Obviously and sadly due to my job I have had to euthanase many horses over the years, every horse is different of course but I think MOST do come to terms better if they can see their friend, in most cases they will sniff and look concerned, mares will often try to rouse a foal, you can usually see the moment when the 'penny drops', the horse will often then walk away slowly and sadly. Sometimes though they will not show any interest or acknowledgement at all. Our Hannah was allowed to see her mother before we buried her where she was put down, Hannah then did not leave the grave all day, they were extremely close. I don't mean to make you feel bad as there were obviously reasons that you did not do this and from your books and posts I KNOW that your horses could not wish for a more loving, thoughtful or respectful owner.)
