I just have to share my little story as no-one else really I know understands what an achievement Eba had this evening.
I dashed down the yard after work to ride and the school was being used, so we went off on a hack on our own. WE got to the end of a field and turned out, only to find a large boxer dog, whose owners were quite some distance off, and unable to call him back. He was bounding behind us barking, so I initially asked Eba to carry on walking to see if he would stay behind. He didn't and was bounding around behind us, so I turned her to face him and thought that unless he got to close we would just stand and face him. At this point his owners arrived still unable to catch said dog, along with a second dog, a spaniel who was also quite out of control barking and dashing about behind Eba. You could tell she wasn't happy, but I asked her to stand, and she did while eventually the dogs were put on leads.
They didn't seem viscious dogs, but they were bounding all around her and barking, and she just stood and was sooooo brave. Finally we carried on, and low and behold came across her least favourite object - a bicycle. The boy very kindly dismounted and stood while we walked past with a snort or two, but again we walked and didn't do anything more.
I am so proud of my girl. She acted like a total old hand, in a situation that afterwards I thought could have been quite dangerous if one of the dogs had got in too close or if they had fancied trying their luck with a nip or worse.
Unfortunatley non-horsey friends aren't impressed, so I had to tell you.

If I see dogs while out hacking and they are making a run for us I shout to the owners that the horse kicks dogs, they soon come running, lucky for you nothing horrible happend I know of many accidents that have been caused because of careless dog owners. |

I had a problem with a dog once out on a hack. We were out by ourselves in the woods. I could see a dog ahead off the lead with its owners. They appeared to turn off one of the tracks before I got to them. As I went past their turnoff and round the corner my mare gave a big spook and shot forward (obviously heard the dog coming when I couldn't) and the next thing the dog came bounding round the corner and started backing and snarling round my mares legs, she made some weird noise which I've never heard her do before and bolted. I managed to stop her and the dog never came after us. The owners weren't even shouting or anything for the dog to come back. I checked her legs etc and there was no marks but she was wearing brushing boots. I was so angry at the dog owners. If you can't control your dogs keep them on a lead!!! We've been out hacking since and dogs have barked but thankfully she hasn't been bothered by it. As she is so sensative I was convinced that incident would have made her a nervous wreck round dogs. |

The only time Roger kicked a dog (GSD - which yelped when he kicked it), I checked Roger's legs when we got back to the yard and sure enough he'd been nipped and drawn blood which was the only reason he kicked. Luckily Roger doesn't blame any other dog and has never raised a leg again.
It is so frustrating when dog owners say "he's only playing" while your horse stands, manfully trying to ignore the dog, they just don't understand that a) their precious pooch could get hurt or b) the horse could react badly, causing an accident

Very good girl,and you too since you managed to stay calm and she no doubt felt it.Fortunately Pasch isn't afraid of dogs,has never been but where we are now the owner and her family have about 25 dogs of all sizes,many of them come on our small everyday hacks running here and there almost between horses' legs and pointing birds and hares,the only time he jumps is if a dog suddenly and noisily comes out of the bushes behind him,but as soon as he see it he stops.True I don't know how he would react if a dog went for a nip! |

well done to you both,, it really annoys me that some dog owners (yes i am one too),,_ fail to keep them under control,, if only they realised how dangerous this could have been,, when ever i see horses on our walks i always put them both on leads and then stand and wait while the horses go past,, i have had similar situation as yours and know how scarey it can be for u both,, so pleased u both came out of it unscathed ,,,deb |
