Does anybody have any experience in herbal products for sinusitus or an allergy to pollen or whatever he has!!

Long story cut short, he has had xrays, bloods, snot taken and analised and nothing can be found. He hasnt a tumour, no blockage, no rotten teeth, everything on the scan proved ok but he has this blasted snotty nose back again and he wont eat his antibiotics, from what I can gather I dont think the antibiotics are doing any good and I think its probably trigegred of by an allergic reaction to something in the field or in the surrounding area, they grow that blasted Rape Seed a couple of fields away so it could be that I dont know.

Without pumping him with antiobiotics and I certainly dont want to pump him with steriods either I was wondering if anyone used any form of herbal treatment on their horses.

I have used Global herbs int he past and found them great but the only thing I can find on their website is for pollen or wheezing horses, which he certianly isnt wheezing.

Any help greatly appreciated otherwise the vet is going to be called again!!!!

Janet and a very snotty smelly Kazbah!!!

Your poor horse! But what a relief that it isn't anything more serious. Sinusitis is a horrible condition!

Garlic is a brilliant herb for breaking up any catarrh and keeping it loose - the last thing you want is for it to end up not being expelled properly and getting into his lungs, so if it is at all possible to feed him it, give him quite high doses of it for about a fortnight and see if it makes a change. It isn't advisable on high doses long term as it can affect their red blood cell count, but a fortnight's worth would be fine. Note, if he suffers sweet-itch, forget this one as it can heat the blood and make that worse.

For his pollen allergy, you could also try the vaseline type of pollen "trap" that can be smeared inside and around nostrils (this is made for humans but I see no reason to use it on a horse). You should be able to find it in a chemist or a good health food shop.

Please let me know how you get on with PollenX as have been considering using it on my cob who has a pollen allergy. Not sure if its already been said but Garlic is also a good addition to feed to help with the respiratory system :)

I am now trying Global herbs PollenX.

He has had every test done under the sun for this snotty nose and nothing has been conclusive to coincide with sinusitus the only thing it can be is I think pollen related which the vet seems to think it is.

He moved where he is 2 years ago and about 2 - 3 fields away they grown that damn rape seed which is apparently notorious for giving horses pollen related illness's, it certainly gives me it and he started with this sinus trouble last summer and we managed to clear it, apparently when it rains the pollen from rape seed gets worse and when it rains he doesnt half pong!!

SO am going to give this a go and see if it helps in anyway, he doesnt quite know if he likes it yet lol he is a monkey for medicine but at least I can syringe it down him and he nearly very nearly licked his lips this morning!!

Amongst all her other symptoms this is one of Po's. She's had it all the time I've owned her. In those early days I noticed that her nose would be snotty during and after exercise and sometimes just when she dropped her head. She too had probes but vet told me it was her sinus clearing and of no consequence.

However, in the last few years her health problems have become more complex and I have learned more about what happened to her and the impact all this has had and is and is still having on her. I also now have a kinesiologist, cranial osteopath and physio on board. The collective thinking is that this nasal discharge was and is due to her system (lymphatic) being blocked, actually she had a few system 'dead ends' the cranial osteopath released. Her nose running is much better since the osteopath started getting her system to 'flow' better and I notice she's not so puffy above the eyes. Interestingly in the beginning after an osteopath session she always has a nasal release. Now it's not as often, I'm presuming this is due to her overall system flowing better and therefore able to move and release the toxins more readily by itself and not being 'forced' into working by exercise, the osteopath work and the shiatzu the physio did on her always brought on a release too.

Not sure if this helps but you never know, it may strike a chord.

Thanks Kes, but his respritory tract is 100%, he has had it checked out, he has no laboured breathing whatsoever, but I do know what you are on about, I knew a horse that used to have something similar for her COPD and Pollen allergies.

This may or may not be of any help but it's similar in nature to your topic. There is a horse in the same yard as me who has both RAO and tree pollen allergy. He can't have antibiotics and does get in a terrible state with very laboured breathing when the levels are high. He has 2 inhalers and I know one is the same that is used in human asthmatics, ventolin. The method used to give inhalers is quite easy as obviously you can't tell a horse to take a deep breath in.
I can find out more if you think it may be of help, if not, just thought I would mention. I don't know about any herbal products though.
Carole.
