Had to share my latest adventure on Kid which could so easily have turned into a disaster!
Went for a hack in the rain in the Forest (fave past time of mine) when we came across a calf that had lost it's mum. It came charging up to my mare before realising that she was not as "cow-like" as hoped for nad ground to a halt. we spent some time trying to locate the herd and then thankfully were able to herd it back to them. So good so far. We resumed the hack and decided to make for the trees as the rain was really starting to come down now and we were in an open space at the time. As we got to the thick of the forest I heard a thundering of hooves behind us only to realise that the cows had decided we were on to a good thing, and had voted to join us. They were approaching in stampede-like fashion. OMG.
At this point there was a clear path into the woods and so I thought I had no option but to duck into the trees and let the cows go past on the path praying Kid wouldn't bolt. She was trembling at this stage bless her and was starting to snort. As they went past us most of the cows went on the path but it was too narrow. So some of them decided to come crashing through the branches and undergrowth which made the most incredible racket. I decided there was nothing I could do (they were coming at us thick and fast) and slipped the reins and grabbed onto the martingale thinking Kid would know best how to deal with this and not wanting to hinder her. She turned round to face them and stood like a statue as one mother and calf barged past us with a yard to spare. I couldn't believe it. If I had been on our Hanoverian Hooligan (very nice but dim) I know either one or both of us would have been badly hurt, no question.
I feel so privileged to have her and she is a total heroine. Testament to arabians being the most intelligent of horses. Thought I'd share! |

Definitely a moment that you are proud of them!
Had a frightening moment on my old horse and he too dealt with it wonderfully. We were hacking up a lane with with M20 on one side and a ditch on the other, a motorcross bike thingy came round the corner (clearly hadnt seen us) in his panic the man on bike skidded and bike slid on its side, he came off and the bike continued sliding downhill towards us leaving no room for us to go anywhere, we stopped i didnt know what to do (nowhere to go to get out of the way) my boy simply jumped it from a standstill!! And continued on his merry way! I too was glad to have been riding him at the time and not another horse as it could have been a far nastier ending.
I'm looking for a new horse at the moment and needless to say i wont consider anything other than an arab! |

Wonderful that you love her and trust her enough to trust her instincts and she trusts and loves you enough to keep you both safe.

Thanks all! Yes I am bursting with pride.... I was with her when she was born and she is soo incredibly special to me.
Delly-b: Your comment made me think - I'm not sure I would have felt comfortable dropping the reins if on another horse, I realise now how much trust I have in her. Gulp. |

My mare would have probably reacted in exactly the same way tbh. However I have one or two geldings at home who probably wouldn't have hung around, with or without me |

Awww... Thats given me goose bumps at your pride... bless her... that is so clever of her...
I can only imagine how it must have felt, and I think honestly you used your head too by dropping the reins. I think I would have panicked and scared us both. Well done to you both!!

Omg that sounded scary, I really don't like cows when out hacking and they do anything other than eat grass!
My little Arab did similar once when faced with a huge trail of special needs kids on bikes. I really thought she'd freak and she just stood there like a little rock! So amazing. Let's face it Arabs are simply amazing!
Glad it all ended ok for both you and hope the farmer fixes the fence! That could've been children in their path!
