Well phase I of us moving to Australia went off sort of according to plan this morning, with the OH catching his flight by the skin of his teeth due to a pile up on the M25. So now all that is left to do is to pack up the house, book flights for me and the kids.......
and decide what to do with the horse!
I am going to try to loan Eba initially so we can definitely try to see if we are going to stay over there long term or not, but I would love to hear people's thoughts about the whole question of 'would you sell or ship a horse to the other side of the world?'
I keep swinging dramatically between:
1) I can't possibly sell her, she is the horse of my dreams, my lifetime horse, I have had her since she was 16 months, and have just backed her and she is coming on so well. She trusts me implicitly and I love her madly.
2) I am totally mad thinking of putting a horse through the trauma of quarantine, a huge flight, a two day at least road trip from Sydney to Melbourne, and that is without the cost! I am not the only person in the world that can give her a good home.
What would you do?

I have thought about this since you posted because I would be the same swinging between the two options you have caome up with. Is there another option? probably not.
So I would loan her. Full contract so that the loaner knows this might be temporary, but also you would have the time to see if she settled with the new home. If Eba settled well, you would be in a better position to decide wether to take her to Oz or not. It might be the bit of the picture you cannot see yet and might help with the final decision. |

Hi, I have just returned from living in Melbourne, Australia for the last 18 months. My OH got offered a job there and when the decision was made my Arab was on box rest following a severely damaged tendon so taking him, selling him or loaning him weren't an option. Due to the new flu regulations your horse will be in quarantine for the best part of a year, if I had taken mine I would have only just have got him back when we decided to return and I don't think you can visit them whilst they are there although this could be different now.
Luckily for me my mum and very good friend cared for him and my two minis so I didn't have to sell/loan. I would put your horse on loan for say a year initially which will give you chance to decide if you like living there. We missed our old life and found australians dull - no sense of humour, in bed at 8.30pm!!! But it's a huge place and I am sure that experience may not be everyone's.

i would find a great loan home here for her initially until you settle and know you dont want to come back.
i know through a friend whos sister moved her horse with her to Aussie, the horse coped fine with the travel but it did cost her a fortune.
The last thing you want to do is move her and then you want to come back to raining uk.

How long it's going to take for you to decide wether you are going to settle there?I would try to find a trusted friend who can keep her until you decide,then fly her if that's the case.I personally couldn't bear to give mine on loan,especially being so far away and not able to check if everything is ok.Also,being still green and just backed,I wouldn't want to risk somebody else spoiling her.I think you would feel so bad thinking you left her,I would.
As for flying,think of all the horses that flew to Hong Kong for the Olympics,that's almost as far,and they went just to perform and come back! |

Re: price, some people we know took an Arabian colt out to New Zealand with them when they emigrated 5 yrs ago and that was 12k then... |

I would loan her first......... but then take her! The folks that fly horses are soooo professional they get better treatment than us, and although its not without risks they do seem to cope well with the flight! Although it doesn't come cheap, think Austrailia could be near the 5 figure mark (correct me if I'm wrong!)!! Good luck! |

I think I'd be inclined to put her on loan for a while until you decide if Australia is definitely for you.
A good friend of mine emigrated taking 11 dogs with her! It cost an absolute fortune for the vet, the paperwork, travelling crates, flights and quarantine, she also stayed near the quarantine kennels the whole time they were there to visit and groom them, then there was an additional internal flight to their new home.
For the first two years in Australia she absolutely hated it and longed to come home, but couldn't afford to because of the cost of bringing all the dogs back again. Fortunately she eventually settled and now has no desire to come back, but she would have done if it wasn't for her dogs.

I'd take her with me too. In fact a friend of mine is going through the same dilemma but is almost certainly going to fly (not ship) horse too. It is not a very economic decision and all your other arguments to leave her here are just as valid! |

Well, if it is unsure what you will be doing maybe loan to begin with....then If your staying it sounds to me like you want her with you....so go for it. |

My friend moved over to Auckland from Derbyshire about 7 yrs ago & took her 2 Part Bred Arabs with (mother & daughter ) , she was worried about the younger one getting stressed out with all the travelling etc but she was fine ! They`ve both settled in very well to their new life & the older mare has since had a lovely palomino colt by the Arabian "Khouros" . |

What a situation to be in, but if I were in your shoes, and I could afford it..... I would do it and take her with me.
I couldnt bare the thought of selling Mila and her living with someone else in the UK, let alone me being on the other side of the world.
Luckily, Mila is no longer for sale, but whilst I was going through the process, I couldnt stop thinking about how much I wanted to spend her last days with her, selling her just wasnt meant to be..!
SOOOOO many horses travel the world and settle fine on the other end.
If you have the pennies, I say she goes with you
