This will be my first employee, any advice on taking someone on to work with my horses. Have got the employees liability ready and they have advised a written contract and also signed health and safety document. Any advice good or bad experiences you have had would be great. |

here are just a few things I used to look at when interviewing yard staff, hope it helps a bit.
1. Set out exactly what their duties will be so that there can be no mistakes about what is expected of them. Make sure what you are expecting is fair and do-able.
2. Make sure the person is made aware of any quirks of the horses.
3. Will they be the only person on the yard at any time? and how will emergencies be dealt with if they are on their own (yard mobile phone perhaps?).
4. Try and be a bit flexible, i.e., if yard duties are finished half an hour early let them go, but if you need them early perhaps on a show day expect the same in return.
5. It's a good idea to have a trial period of,say, a week where you can work alongside them and get to know them and how they behave towards the horses. It also gives them a chance to see if they are going to like the job. This is a good 'get out' clause for both of you.
best of luck, and I hope you find someone really nice.
