I am feeling very cross with myself at the moment. I put my lovely rising 2 year old filly Diva and her "mummy" Gini the Welsh pony out with my old girl Fayre on Friday. They have been in adjoining fields for 18 months now and had got through to each other by accident in the week with no issue.

I sat with them in the field all morning and they were fine. Then when I popped in the house she kicked her - hard. Two wounds, several stitches and 10 staples later I am hating myself. Poor Diva. She is such a sweet, passive filly. I cant believe my 28 year old turned into such a wicked witch - especially as she has had her foal herself. Clearly jealousy does not mellow with age. Fayre is destined to be in solitary confinement for the rest of her years.

Now I have got that off my chest I feel better. Bloomin horses.

also try dermsiol does wonders, really heals the wounds fast with minimal scarring. sometimes horses can be so unpredictable, phoebe our arab filly still gets kicked and shes been running with the same company for over a year.

Aloe Vera gel is really useful for minimising scarring and encouraging hair regrowth.

Just a little update. Wounds healed really well and stitches and staples came out yesterday.

BUT - she had a little run round and the one wound seemed to burst open again. There is nothing to re-stitch so it will just have to heal itself from the inside. Probably gonna have a scar but that really is nothing compared to where we have come with Diva and her bone cyst.

So, scar, scab, hairy coat or whatever we are still aiming to get her out to her first Saddlebred show on 8th May. Keep everything crossed for us please.

I think we got off lightly really. Not much swelling, stayed sound and the wounds are nice and dry so hopefully wont scar too much. Good job because I had just sent off my entries to the 3 counties and a big Saddlebred show on 8th May!!

Fayre has never kicked anything else except my two palomino "replacements". She definitely knows and does not like being usurped. I should not have been lulled into a false sense of security. Once a wicked witch, always a wicked witch - 28 or not!!. Good job I love her..... and its a good job she likes her own space because she is gonna be on her own for the rest of her days.

Diva says thank you for the concern. She is a big grown up girl now and she has taken it all in her stride. She has been out staples and all each day with Jazz's 6ft fly sheet to keep the germs out. She is already 15.1hh at 20 months!

Definately not a bad mummy, just a naughty old mare! I once put a pony mare in with my kind, beautiful old mare who turned into the bitch from hell, cornering her and kicking her. I remember reading that it is the older mare who is in charge in a herd.
Good advice from Babs and a big kiss to Diva

Oh what a shame.....hope your young lady heals well without scarring.

When introducing, we have found two`s company, three`s a crowd, so possibly the old girl was choosing who her `necking friend` was and seeing off your poor youngster

We can only do our very best and hope to keep our beloved equines safe and free from injury....you certainly were not being a bad Mummy

Good luck

How could you have known if you sat there all morning and they were fine then? Most people wouldn't have waited that long, you are must certainly a good mummy! Vetting makes mistakes, it's how we learn :)

Healing thoughts to Diva

Not at all! We listen to our babies, we make mistakes, we learn, we fix things, we do our best = a good mother.

Big to Diva
