hiya, verona has started waving her head around alot of rubbing me and pushing with her head, she is also chewing lead ropes, all of which she never did before, is she teething do you think?? if it is is it something i just let pass? i feel like i dont want to put to much pressure on her head if she is teething? but if its just a naughty stage i dont want her thinking she can push about?? any words fromt the collective?

Yes she has been backing up and move over or a long time now, she does seem to be full of the spring though she is 13.3hh but she is leading like a 16.2 hh at the mo!

Verona will easily learn to back up at her age. My donkey foal Clover has learned already. She is two weeks old. I used to think there were age lilits on learning things. Not any more. Manners and respecting personal space are essential and the sooner the better as it makes everything so much easier. She will probably be learing to back out of the trailer too.

Hope this doesn't sound too authorative cinnypony. Sounds like you have similar ways to me with yours.

Cinny is rubbing her head as itchy with moulting off her winter coat, and also the odd tick that I've had to remove.

She seems to consider me the ultimate itching post!

If she does when I rather she didn't, I gently ask her to back up - which normally stops her as I've asked for my personal space to be respected.

However would Verona understand how to back up yet?

A friends yearling filly has started chewing everything lately and she has got really full of herself, we put it down to the spring grass and being eager to get out in the field, mind you Arabi is 7 this year and he still loves a good chew on the leadrope and anything else he can get his teeth into really

I didnt think they teethed yet but thought id ask! thanx, oh Linda that was another thing i thought as she seems scratchy and itchy on her head and flinging her head when putting head collar on and as i said its only started last week or so, so if it cant be teething then i can feel confident im not hurtung her and remind her to be respectful, thankyou ladies

Shouldn't be teething as others have also said. But it might be because she is changing her coat, some of mine are itchy and trying to rub their coat out on me. It is a respect thing, don't allow her to rub on you. ask her top take a step backwards when she does this.

Sounds like she knows spring is coming - agree with Caryn, she won't be teething just yet. I had one filly that would hunt out velcro to gum on when she was 2, coming 3 as she loved the feel of it on her gums! Definitely don't stand for chewing leadropes.... you'll be upset when she gnaws on your favourute reins later in life! Also watch that she's not chewing on haynet strings etc as she might swallow bits.
Got a 3yo gelding here who I don't think has a pair of matching teeth in his head, poor soul. He's happy enough and eating well but looks very funny when you peel his lips back!

Hi Sheena,
I'm by no means an expert but I don't think a yearling will be teething. I know they don't start to lose baby teeth until approximately 2 1/2 and I assume they have pushed their full complement of baby teeth through the gums well before weaning (well, that would make sense anyway) but if anyone knows for sure then I'm happy to learn!

She could well be feeling well and confident with you and just getting a bit cocky and pushing the boundaries?

Caryn
