Please someone confirm that if an electrical appliance is plugged in and switched on, if you lead a horse over it with shoes on there is a very good chance the metal will go through the plastic coating on the flex and give them a shock, I have never ever led a horse over a plugged in wire, yet today at our livery yard my sister asked for them to unplug it so she could get passed and was told, he will be OK don't worry, am I going mad or are they just plain idiots.

Years ago we were clipping one of ours who hated being clipped, he spun round, trod on the cable and cut through it completely. Luckily I was right next to the switch and cut the power immediately he swung round, before he trod on it, and nobody got a shock, including him. I would never walk a horse over an electric cable having seen how easily they can be severed. I would have thought the recent horrific incident with the racehorses would be enough to convince people that it is not a safe thing to do, ever.

yep we would never work a horse over a live wire it is so dangerous

If the horse is shod and stands on the cable there is every chance that the insulation could be compressed or cut by the weight of the horse and the live wire could shock the horse - not worth the risk.

Also, my OH informs me that using a circuit breaker (RCB) won't offer any protection because by the time it trips out the damage is done. A friend's horse did once get a shock from accidentally stepping on the lead while being clipped - luckily no harm done, but no point taking an unnecessary risk. The 'plain idiots' are the sort of people who get away with everything while those of us who take every possible care always seem to get the illnesses and injuries!

definitely up-plug if you are walking over a live wire. Electricity is very dangerous!!!never take a chance with it.

Thank you my sister said they looked at her like she was stupid when she asked for it to be unplugged.

Just plain idiots Why take the chance?

Horses are highly susceptible to electric shocks - you only have to go back a few weeks to the awful and unnecessary deaths of those racehorses. I would always unplug and move the wire.
