My 10 month psynergy baby,
Who sire and dam are both chestnut, he is getting specs of white hairs all over his body as if he is going strawberry roan, he is going white under his belly and between his legs.
Do you know what is happening?
Will he stay chestnut or go strawberry roan or rose grey ?

Very interesting link from Pashon2001. I note there is also a good illustration of Bend Or spots which came up for discussion recently.
Red also has a white 'zip' up part of his tummy and lots of white flecking in the wheel arches.

Hannah has a lot of grey in her coat (especially on her face) her dad is chestnut but her mum is grey so i guess there's a chance she may grey out then.....i bloody hope not though!!!!

I have a Rabicano chestnut to show you, her dam was grey and her sire was bay

Here she is:

And this photo shows her spotty 'armpits'!!

This is a pic of her at around 11 months old, so should give you an idea of how heavily (or not) rabicano your boy is:

Well I hope all of your pink babies are covering their ears at all this "roan-ist" discussion I am feeling a need to start a "show us your roans" thread.

I personally like colours where they are dramatically different from the seasons because its exciting waiting to see what colour they will be each summer. I love it when my pally's go from "billy goat cream" to glistening gold. And I fondly remember a couple of gorgeous natives who went from grey roan in the winter to red roan in the summer. Looked liked different horses - two for one deal

No such thing as a bad colour in an Arab imo. Enjoy - and be proud of your silver bits.

Ali is rabicano too, I would NEVER had bought a roan either Caryn!!! He won me over and although am not keen on the white hairs, everyone else thinks its lovely! Do like the stripey bits on the top of tail!

if both parents are chestnut he WILL stay chestnut (chestnuts only carry that colour gene).

I never knew that how interesting... I learn something new everyday!!! So does that only work with chestnuts?! I know about the diluted gene ect but never knew about the 2 chestnuts make a chestnut!!!

xsara is light bay but has alot of white hairs through her coat more noticable in summer than winter we had another half bred same light bay but with even more white through her coat than xsara and it got more as she got older. Xsara even has a patch of white under her belly which is dense roaning white rather than true white and it is noticable on her shoulders, and her face has a lot of white too. It was a pity she didn't have an odd white patch or two as she could have done coloured classes her dam was skewbald

I agree with the other posters - if both parents are chestnut he WILL stay chestnut (chestnuts only carry that colour gene).

Roger has roaning which is more apparent during the change of coat and which comes through his maternal grand mother, Bint Rushna. Other people notice it more than I do!

Ha ha my 2 year old is bay going roan and I'm horrified ! I thoroughly dislike roan (as I may have mentioned on here before ) and just pray that he stays bay with lots of white in his coat.

Grey would have been perfect.
Bay is fine.
Roan is NOT !

Agree yours won't go grey though and I bet stays chestnut with lots of roaning in the coat. I think Kate B on here has a lovely example of such colouring .

here is a link to rabicano and sabino markings http://www.angelfire.com/on3/TrueColoursFarm/Chestnut_Sabinos.html
Pashon2001 Posted - 21 Mar 2011 : 9:08:55 PM
He cannot go grey without having at least one grey parent. It is not uncommon in chestnuts to get what they call Rabicano markings, these are white flecking, sometimes to the extent of being almost roan. Its normal and you will probably find that they will be more in summer than winter or vice versa depending on his coat.
alijo Posted - 21 Mar 2011 : 8:07:19 PM
i also forgot to add that he is also going dappley with dark patches of chestnut
