So I just want to ask what people use and opinions ect!!!

I'm as struggling to decide what fly rug to buy this year

After an embarrassing year of showing Tiger like this-

I have over the winter managed to grow his mane out to a good 6/7 inches long which is also very thick and strong, due to lots of advice secret formulas and LOTS AND LOTS of TLC!!!

So now I have a mane I don't want to get to spring and have him rub it all out again, so this year we are buying decent electric fencing to prevent him from getting to his secret itching spots and also investing in a decent fly rug!!!

But I can't decide which one, last year we got the vet out to examine him coz we were pretty much 100% sure he had sweet itch but he doesn't he's not allergic just itchy, and is irritated by the flies (I suppose like us)

But I am getting him a sweet itch rug as she told me it will offer him the best protection!!!

Now I've had lots of different opinions on rugs some people saying the-
Rambo Sweet Itch Hoody- but then loads of people say they roast in them and they rub the mane out
Also hear about the Premier Equine Sweet itch one and the Mark Todd Fly combo silver thing!!!

I defo don't want a boett I hate them!!!

I have also been looking at the Snuggy Hood Sweet Itch hood thing, so just getting him the hood and then using a standard fly rug over the top (which I already have)!!!

Has any one used the Snuggy Hood one!?

My biggest fear is that I'm going to spend near enough £100 on a decent fly rug for THAT to rub his mane out!!!

So any advice on Rugs ect would be amazing I just can't decide!!!

Thank you for all the replies all have been helpful!!!

I think I'm gonna go for the Snuggy hood- hood hahah!!! and then put a light weight fly rug over the top (as he only rubs his man)

I always have put the mane and tail conditioner before any hood/or rug on so do that already!!!

Thanks again for all the replied really appreciated!!

Hey! After much deliberation with Tao on what sweet itch rug to get him i settled for the snuggy as he rubbed his mane out in ireland last year and rubbed the top of his tail. What i like about the snuggy ones rather than the boett or demulenkamp is that the neck piece goes over the poll and has the head all in one so if i want i can put a lightweight on over the top for april showers or put the body on too. T mostly rubs behind his ears where he cant reach (although he does use his hind legs to do so!) so i was concerned a boett etc wouldnt hold up. Also the snuggy is available in white which isnt great for dirt but doesnt absorb the sun like the black/brown boett etc. Also with the snuggy body the tail isnt just a flap, there is a bit under the flap that wraps round the top and the dock which is where he rubs, the other makes dont. It hasnt rubbed his mane so far and have had it on a couple weeks already as our yard has a canal one side and a river the other so midges come early for us. Downside is the material is a bit thicker than the others so i was told by alot of people to adjust him to 'being warm' otherwise they can get very sweaty midsummer when its really hot. The rambo is ok but not great as an SI rug, more a fly rug. Also, i had a hy guardian fly rug last year which was fantastic! The fit is excellent, google them. In my opinion the best 'fly rug' on the market and not too expensive, about 45quid. I bought mine in a january sale for £25! If u want anymore info about any of the rugs let me know! Its a shame there is no tail guard invented as T doesnt need the body really, just tail protection. Lastly, put 'canter mane and tail' conditioner on as it helps the mane glide underneath and be too silky to get rubbed. Sorry if my spelling and grammer are awful, im on my phone at the mo. Theres pics of T in his rugs on my fbk, will try post them on here soon! Sian x x

Snuggy have a sheath guard too (yuk) but will keep flies off sarcoids (now treated but paranoia set in)

I have ordered one as it needs to be put on anytime now - even for the mildest of cases.

One of my full liveries has a snuggy hoods rug on her mare from april on, so if your going to buy one, do it NOW iF YOU CAN CATCH THEM before they start Itching your on a winner

She rubs her belly raw and all her mane out but last year she was absolutally fine!

This mare has the fanny flap attatchemnt ( which is GROSS on a mare!) as well and its vile but it keeps her really comfy

she doesnt bother with the face mask as she got really hot in it

Best of luck

Thank you so much for the reply!!! Yes Tiger sounds VERY similar to your lovely boy!!!

And if thats your bay boy in your signature I would just kill for Tiger just to have a mane like that!!!

I have just got so paranoid about the rug rubbing his mane out I've think I've gone a little insane hahaha!!!

I think I'm defo gonna have to ring Snuggy Hoods and talk it through!!!

Did you plait your boys mane underneath it also or leave it loose, as all winter I have plaited Tigers and it seems to have kept it all in tact!!!

Thanks again, your boy is stunning and I can see the mickey mouse resemblance!!!

Hiya Jess

I use one on my lad and i would definately remmomend it. After years of struggling with his mane i got one a couple of summers ago and it really helps. He sounds a lot like your lad, he doesnt have sweet itch, but he despises flys and itches like crazy, especially with midges, he just cannot stand them! He has the most finest of coats and is allergic to a lot of fly repellents so we really had proplems trying to keep him not going crazy with them. He would always rub the bottom part of his mane and ive now manages to grow it back, dont get me wrong itll never be as long as my other lads lol, but its definately better. We had to have it adjusted by them at snuggy hoods as it rubbed him in places (almost everything rubs him, bless) but they were really helpful and got it fitting fab.

Here he is wearing it last summer, the eye holes are bigger than normal, they were one of the parts that was rubbing, i think he looks a bit like micky mouse lol
