Anyone feed these? Feed merchant has recommended them to me for weight gain. I have bought one speculative sack. Looks like they need soaking.

oops sorry didnt see the post there for barley rings!!
ok try equipower(feedbalancer)made by triple crown(now owned by badmington feeds)£15.00 a bag feed x2 coffee mugs a day (more if working hard) and mix with top spec conditioning flakes ...very good combination !and non-molassed chaff
I have fed equipower for 5-6 yrs its very good stuff no matter what work you are doing

blimey! introduce these carefully they DO put weight on but can make your horse ping! if fed too much too quickly..
i fed a coffee mug morning and night and found max x4 coffee mugs a day was enough. ,,i would mix with water 10mins before feeding and see how much they swelled before adding some more - they are very good but dont expect to see much until at least 2-3 weeks!but yes they do work!

i was looking at the barley rings but have opted for baileys no 1 instead :)they seem to enjoy it too :)

How funny that he didn't like them! I feed them for condition, soaked and mixed into the feed. Haven't bothered much this year as it hasn't been as cold as last year (yet!).

My friends dog absolutely loves them if he can get to them before the horse does!

Allen & Page state that Calm and Condition contains a small amount of sugar beet - which is why you need to soak it - it takes a couple of minutes or so, it also contains linseed and Soya oil. It's about £11.50 a bag but it lasts quite a long time - Charlie gets a soaked scoop a day. None of them have refused to eat it...

Thought I'd update you on barley rings - Spider absolutely refuses to eat them. There was a neat pile of soaked barley rings in the bottom of his evening feed bucket and the morning feed was untouched, so contaminated it was by barley rings. YO is going to feed them to one of the greedier ones...
Will look into Calm and Condition. YO says she thinks it is mainly sugar beet? Thanks for suggestions as ever.

i feed them soaked to my pure bred colt and have no problems at all with them they are great for weight gain and maintenance and not heating at all.... or if they are then without them i'm guessing he'd be half dead!!! he gets a full scoop of them soaked with a scoop of hi fi and a scoop of sugar beet never had a problem with him getting too fat and he's looking great!! he's been on that diet or a year now and am really pleased with the results

If the Barley rings are too heating then I would recommend Allen & Page's Calm and Condition - it's barley free, and has brought my sister's gelding through the winter in much better shape than last year (when he didn't get it), he is a bit stressy, but he hasn't heated up on it. Lily is on a mug of Baileys Outshine a day, she's looking very well on that, but is a better doer anyway.
Arachnid Posted - 01 Mar 2011 : 4:34:06 PM
Ha! Yes we thought they might be 'heating'. Starting off cautiously with a half a scoop! Spider is very energetic but I am struggling to keep weight on him despite three dinners a day, readigrass etc. He does look fit but a bit too lean.

Crikey, theres a blast from the past!

I used to work for some Fell showing peeps years ago and they used to feed main ring blue ( unsoaked for the normal eaters) to get them FAT FAT FAT!

It was soaked for any O.A.Ps. that needed extra weight in the winter as well.

Feed with care... it does the job and we're coming into spring!
